?? For a Simpler Job Search, Try Bottom Up
If you’re applying to 100 positions per week — or heck, 100 positions total — and not getting a response, here are 3 bottom-up steps that will put you on a more effective path…
Tip #1: Stop that. ??
If you haven’t got a response from 100 submissions, don’t send out the same stuff to the same kinds of positions 100 more times next week.?
Apparently, there’s a disconnect between your resume or your cover letter (or both) and the positions you’re applying for.
You may need to revise your resume to demonstrate your relevance or take a solution-focused approach or list more achievements (you may have more than you think).
Or maybe it’s time to burn your resume — not literally, of course!
But revisit it with an open mind to improve your chances by crafting a better resume.
Still stuck? My team and I write stellar resumes.
Once your improved resume is in hand…
Tip #2: Look beyond the big job boards. ??
Easily 50% of job openings aren’t posted, and many of those postings aren’t on general job boards.
This isn’t the “hidden job market†you’ll hear people speak of. These jobs aren’t invisible, just off the beaten track…
Start by checking for open positions on the websites of your ideal companies.
Next: Check for positions on industry-specific job sites.
A more focused search with a relevant resume will have better results than what you’ve tried so far, and here’s another thing that works…
Tip #3: Uncover the hidden job market
This arena is considered “hidden†because the jobs aren’t listed anywhere, or positions are filled by referral or through a direct connect. Some positions are created on the fly for the right person when they appear.
To uncover the hidden job market, reach out to:

- People who do the work you want to do
- People who work where you’d love to work, and
- People that you know who know those people
Yes, I’m talking about networking, which isn’t a dirty word. It doesn’t have to be painful or schmoozey.?
It can be a casual exchange of direct messages or emails, or an informational interview.
Either way, the key is to not ask for a job, but to make connections and develop relationships that bring an ideal job to you.
?? Remember: Your job search is not a numbers game. You don’t improve your odds by applying to more jobs; you’ll be most effective when you target the jobs that are right for you.

?? How to Prepare for an Interview After Your Layoff
Career coach colleague Andrea Yacub Macek 's recent post is a must-read if you’ve been laid off and job interviews are on the horizon.
Andrea’s post is stacked with good stuff, including:
- Acknowledging your thoughts and feelings
- What to say (and what not to say) about your layoff
- An important message about serving your higher goals
- 5 sample interview questions to prepare answers for
I have this to add:
You may want to leap to practicing for your interview, but I encourage you to work through Andrea’s list from top to bottom.
Your first step is to take time to process your feelings, so you're able to show up at that interview with a future focus.
This applies to job searching after a layoff and many other tricky transitions.
Don't carry your imposter syndrome, your big emotions about the layoff, your mistakes, or your misgivings into the interview.
Process your emotions and fears first, and only after that, prepare a bigger picture response for the interview that conveys the true you — the you beyond your layoff.
Your job search may not be easy, but it will be much easier without carrying old baggage.
Travel light, my friend!
