How to rebuild trust

How to rebuild trust

You are human —as is everyone around you.

At some point in your career, you’ll need to make amends for a mistake.

It may not even be your fault. You may need to step up on behalf of your organization to take responsibility for a decision or policy that had unintended consequences.

Here are four steps you can take to repair trust on your team:

Adapted from HBR article "Begin with Trust" by Frances Frei & Anne Morriss

? Find out what happened

Allow space for transparency and the sharing of perspectives.

Try using open-ended questions such as:

?? Can you share what caused this to happen?

?? What thoughts / feelings do you have regarding what happened?

?? Do you have any ideas to prevent this from happening again?

This is a time to be a good listener and speak less.

? Take responsibility for the situation

Acknowledge what caused the trust to breakdown. This is important, even if you're not directly responsible for the problem.

This doesn't necessarily mean admitting that "it was your fault" (if it was not) but rather accepting the role you play in addressing the issue and working towards a solution.

By doing so, you show your dedication to fostering a positive environment for open communication and growth.

? Resolve to move forward

Take action and outline the upcoming moves that need to be made, whether they involve systems, individuals, or procedures. Whenever feasible, specify a timeframe for these next steps.

It's also important to forgive yourself and forgive others by leaving the incident that broke the trust in the past.

? Follow up

After the planned actions have been completed, make sure to follow up and find out how things are progressing.

Being accountable plays a vital role in fixing a relationship, and it's important to understand that it might require some time.

Repairing trust after a breach is hard and not a quick process.

However, if you tackle the task with honesty, an open attitude, and a strong commitment to follow through, people are likely to place even greater trust in you than they did prior to the incident.

Pro Tip: As you strive to rebuild trust, pay attention to what people have to say and how they feel, even if their words are tough to hear or repetitive. When individuals know their voices have been heard, they're more inclined to move forward.

Final note:

In the end, trust is not just about repairing what's broken; it's about building something stronger and more resilient than before.

By embracing transparency, taking responsibility, and committing to ongoing communication, you can pave the way for a future where trust is not easily shaken.

Remember, trust is a delicate and precious foundation in any relationship, and its restoration is a journey worth undertaking.

Thank you, Margarita. Relationships can be stronger if both parties don't take the easy way out and just "quit".

Trust can be rebuilt. But it takes willingness, persistence, consistency, and at the end of the day acceptance - because despite your efforts, the other person may not feel ready Margarita
