How To Quit Your Job For YouTube
Q: Is my niche too boring to build a channel around? I’m in medical school, been making videos about navigating the process for a few years, but nothing is taking off. Any advice?
- Marissa K.
A: No niche is too small. Or too boring.
Consider Cleo Abram — the former Vox journalist whose videos about quantum computers, nuclear waste, and ocean maps have earned millions of views each.
Two years after leaving Vox, Abram has over 2 million subscribers and has made videos with NASA, Formula 1, and MKBHD.
I asked Abram what she learned at Vox to prepare for the jump and break through in her niche on YouTube.
“The most important skill that I learned at Vox was visual storytelling first,” Abram said.
“The visuals aren't an afterthought or like slapped on after you have a script…[They] help you understand something because you can see it.”
Abram calls them key visuals: the video’s core concept that the viewer needs to see. For her show Huge If True, it’s a custom animation explaining a complex concept.
Below is a key visual from her video The Ocean Is Deeper Than You Think. We Need Better Maps — highlighting just how deep the ocean actually is.
Not sure what your key visual is or if you have one?
Use Abram’s napkin test.
The idea is simple: when explaining your video’s concept to a friend, if you have to pull out a napkin to draw a diagram or concept — that is a key visual.

“When I need to…show you something on my phone and pause it and be like ‘You see this!’ — That’s a good video,” Abram said. “Otherwise it should just be an essay because that’s much easier to write.”

Bottom Line: Find your key visual. Validate with the ‘napkin test’
