How to put the LinkedIn Pixel and Tracking Code on Your Website

One of the very best things about social media is that you can track people who engage with content. It's actually super important to creating ads that perform well because ads aren't getting any cheaper.

LinkedIn is a pretty good platform because you can target people who have jobs. That may sound funny but you know what people with jobs have? Money! And people with good jobs have lots of it.

It is widely accepted that people who engage with content on social media are usually interested in the content they are "liking" or reading or clicking on. Knowing who these people are goes a long way to figuring out who might be a potential buyer.

When you don't use tracking code, you are really missing out on an opportunity.

Didn't know LinkedIn offers free code? A lot of people don't.

If you are a LinkedIn user, you may not know they offer free tracking code. With this code, you can see who from LinkedIn visited your website. This is handy if you are writing articles or running LinkedIn ads.

Now, LinkedIn doesn't advertise that the tracking code is available to everyone. Normally you have to run a LinkedIn ad campaign to get the code. But I'm here to tell you that you can use LinkedIn's tracking code even if you're not running ads. What can I say...I am here to help!

Imagine the home construction company or [INSERT EXPENSIVE SERVICE HERE] that is targeting people using both LinkedIn job titles and geography.

In this scenario, such a company might target people with senior executive positions living in Vancouver. This is a pretty good shortcut to targeting homeowners or people with higher incomes which is not a targeting option.

With the LinkedIn pixel installed, you can write free articles on LinkedIn (posts work really great) about how to renovate your kitchen or [DO SOMETHING ELSE EXPENSIVE] with a link to your website and then use the data gathered by LinkedIn (for free) to run a paid follow-up campaign. Neat!

Tracking is power

Once you know that people who hit your website are being saved, you can get really fancy. What do I mean by this? Well, you can create different pages on your site (a.k.a. "landing pages) that each have a different focus and then you can track how people engage with those pages. For example...

Create a new page that discusses how to renovate your kitchen with hidden features and another page that discusses how to renovate your kitchen with the latest Wolf appliances. Each page has a link to the other. You'll be able to see who travels from one page to the next. Those that do are very interested in what you are selling! These people are great candidates to run a follow up ad now that you know they went to two pages from your LinkedIn article...

Tracking is relatively new to LinkedIn

This tracking code is a relatively new feature. Although Facebook has been using tracking code forever, LinkedIn first made it available about 6 months ago. Facebook is a multi-gazzilion dollar company because everyone is hooked on making ads with tracking codes. LinkedIn is now trying to emulate that success and they are making good progress.
