How to Pull Yourself Out of a Slump

How to Pull Yourself Out of a Slump

From time to time we all sink into a rut. Here are 5 ways to get yourself out, fast.

1) Smile - Sounds corny but if you act as if you are happy, upbeat and confident powerful evidence agrees with what I and my clients have experienced time and time again. If you pull your shoulders back, walk with speed, keep your head up, smile and talk with a tone that an enthusiastic person would use then your mind will find it very difficult to stay in a depressive mode as it will be receiving all the opposite chemical signals from the body.

'Smiling has the power of relaxing the mind, boosting the immune system, slowing the heartbeat and breathing rate' - Dr T. P. Chia

2) Get Your Heart-rate Above 120 for 15 minutes - In other words, exercise. People have all sorts of reasons not to run, swim, cycle - 'it's too cold', 'it's too hot', 'it's too wet', 'I haven't got a bike'. I've found the best way to get past all my excuses is to buy a cheap fold up exercise bike that doesn't take up much room. It takes 3 seconds to unpin it and start cycling whatever the weather and with all the stats on the screen you can track exactly what your heart rate is and how long you've been on so you can get off the moment the necessary deed has been done. There are many out there - I just went on Amazon and picked the one which had the least negative reviews (I don't trust a lot of the positive reviews as some of these can be fake). The impact of this daily routine is astonishing and will encourage you towards taking on other powerful game changer habits and routines.

3) Fulfilment first - Get your most fulfilling, creative task done first thing in the morning - ideally before anyone else in the house is awake. This way you can give 100 percent to filling yourself up before your responsibilities to the world start kicking in. Taking care of yourself first is a dramatic statement to yourself which will boost your self confidence and lift your spirits for the rest of the day. For me, it's writing, for you it may be making art, designing an event for a charity, developing a new business venture or something completely different.

Whatever it is it is something that you've always been wanting to 'get round to' and it will often challenge and stretch your greatest strengths. Making time early in the morning is also good because that is when most people are more open and creative. Try getting up an hour earlier than the rest of your household, go straight downstairs, take a large drink of water and just get started, no questions or faffing. Once you get started, if it is the right project you will get absorbed and often produce your very greatest life work. This is a sacred hour which must be carved out and protected at all costs. Yes, that includes a relaxing evening and early to bed the night before.

4) Random Acts of Kindness - RAKs have been shown to massively boost our sense of well being. You don't have to save a village from starvation in order to achieve this. Simply writing a note or making a call to an isolated elderly great aunt to let her know that someone cares is sufficient to provide happiness to both you and her. When you reach out beyond yourself you start to fulfil higher level spiritual human needs such as the need to contribute that work naturally towards fulfilling some more base level ones like the need for significance. If you were to try it the other way around and aim to be significant you would probably end up in a greater stupor of depression than before.

5) Grow - When we speak about the highest level human needs that organically fulfil all the others there are really only two - Growth and Giving. Find a way to grow every day. Order 3 books online today that are recommended for personal or professional growth. Make sure you always have a steady supply chain of new, stimulating and healthy materials for your mind to consume. If you do not then you will naturally absorb the negativity and corrosive material from the likes of the news channels and street gossip.

'Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people' - Eleanor Roosevelt

Switch from a Fixed Mindset to a Growth Mindset. The former festers stagnancy, deterioration and depression while the later fosters fulfilment, happiness and greatness. The moment we let a failure or a success define who we are is the moment we start moving backwards. Instead see each day as an opportunity to expand yourself beyond the realms you ever thought possible - one step at a time, one new book at a time, one new idea at a time.

“The mind, once stretched by a new idea, never returns to its original dimensions.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson
