How to provide modern energy in informal settlements - a South African example.

In South Africa, as in much of sub-Saharan Africa, strong urbanization trends lead to people settling in ever less suitable informal locations, which are often considered ineligible for basic service provision. A new publication by researchers from KTH-dESA and UCT Energy Research Center, in the journal EnergyStrategy Reviews, explores how access to basic energy services can be provided to informal urban households in South Africa. With a case study in the Western Cape province, the publication presents results from a Multi Criteria Sustainability Analysis comparing current and alternative ways of accessingenergy services. The study provides examples where the barriers to grid electrification in these informal settlements are overcome, and also identifies the importance of off-grid electrification where they are not.
