How Professional Speakers Build Their Business Through Social Media

As a professional speaker, I have seen firsthand the power of social media when it comes to building a successful speaking business. Social media platforms have revolutionized the way we connect with others, share our message, and grow our audience. In this article, I’ll share some tips and strategies for using social media to build your speaking business.

  1. Define your brand:?Before you start using social media, it's important to define your brand and messaging. What do you stand for? What sets you apart from other speakers? What are your unique points of view? Your brand should be reflected in your social media content, visuals, and messaging.

2. Choose the right platforms:?There are numerous social media platforms available, but not all of them will be the best fit for your speaking business. Consider your target audience and which platforms they are most active on. For example, LinkedIn is a great platform for B2B speakers, while Instagram is more visual and can be great for lifestyle or motivational speakers. I personally believe YouTube is the best platform for speakers, since we work in visual medium. Build a solid presence on YouTube is a must moving forward. In the interest of full disclosure, I only began to recognize this in the past twelve months, and as a result, my YouTube following is rather modest compared to my footprint in TV, radio, and print media. 3. Create engaging content:?Your social media content should be engaging, informative, and aligned with your brand. Consider creating video content, sharing behind-the-scenes photos, and providing tips and advice for your followers. Use storytelling to connect with your audience and share your message in a way that resonates with them. Authenticity and vulnerability are essential. Be yourself and your audience will find you.?

4. Be consistent:?Consistency is key when it comes to social media. You should aim to post regularly and at a frequency that works for you and your audience. This will help build your following and keep your brand top of mind for your followers. Once a week is good. Once a day is even better. Set a schedule you can stick to on the platforms that generate the best results. Mine is YouTube, where I post almost every day. 5. Engage with your audience:?social media is a two-way street, so it's important to engage with your followers. Respond to comments, answer questions, and thank people for sharing your content. Respectfully debate people who disagree with you and encourage healthy discourse. The more you communicate with your fans, the more viewers the platform will expose to your content.?

6. Utilize paid advertising:?While organic reach on social media can be limited, paid advertising can help you reach a larger audience. Consider using Facebook or Instagram ads to promote your speaking business to a targeted audience.

7. Measure your results:?It's important to track your social media metrics to understand what's working and what's not. Use analytics tools to measure your engagement, reach, and conversions, and adjust your social media strategy accordingly.

In summary, social media can be a powerful tool for professional speakers looking to build their business. By defining your brand, choosing the right platforms, creating engaging content, being consistent, engaging with your audience, utilizing paid advertising, and measuring your results, you can use social media to establish yourself as a thought leader, connect with your audience, and ultimately grow your speaking business.
