How Prince Spaghetti Day Made Me Stronger

How Prince Spaghetti Day Made Me Stronger

Happy Hump Day. It's the middle of the workweek and the weekend is in sight.

Did you know that the expression Hump Day, by some accounts, goes back to the 1950s. It's all down hill from here but you know there's no coasting these days, right?

When I think of Wednesdays, I'm reminded of the commercial from the 1960s and 1970s that said in Boston, Wednesday is known as Prince Spaghetti Day. Click here for the commercial.? This little boy Anthony runs through the streets of Boston's Italian section known as the North End as fast as he can to have his spaghetti dinner with his family.

Other days of the week he is not in as much of a hurry.

When I came to the United States from Italy, I was also a little boy, 9 years old. So many people would tease me the way kids do thanks to this commercial. They'd say, "Anthony! Are you eating spaghetti today?"

Now, to be honest, it's a surprise to no one that I do like spaghetti. But that commercial led me to keep my name "Antonio!" I'm not Anthony, the kid in the commercial, I'm Antonio!

So, I have a love/hate relationship with this commercial. It did make me a little popular too. But you know what, all of those events helped me become who I am today. In the end, it's all good, as they say!

And so I want to encourage you because if you're struggling with anything now, it can help make you even better.

Click here to see a clip about how my family's experience, and yes our meals together, helped shaped my outlook.

I'd love to hear your story!

Thanks for sharing your personal story, Antonio! You came from Italy at 9 and I from Lebanon at 11. I’m sure, like many immigrants, we all had our fair share of being made fun of, picked on, and called names…all of it made us stronger and is a part of who we are.
