How Presenters Collaborate with AI
Who is the best presenter? You or Generative AI

How Presenters Collaborate with AI

Generative AI has made the content generation process easier than ever.?You can start with a general idea, and then use Generative AI to quickly and efficiently create a first draft of a presentation or speech. ??

Remember, this is a first draft, not your final version.?Delivering draft content to an audience will likely result in confusion, overwhelm and frustration.

Successful leaders employ three best practices to turn draft content into a polished presentation that connects with the hearts and minds of their audience.

The Connection Triangle?: Conversation Skills

1) Start with Context

Generative AI can serve as a wonderful research assistant. ?Give it a request for information (known as a prompt), and it will gather a tremendous amount of content for you to review.??The problem is that vague requests may result in a lot of content that may be irrelevant, inaccurate, and simply overwhelming.

[Generative AI Tip]

Take the time to fully understand why your audience is attending the presentation.?What is the problem they are facing??What outcomes are they looking to achieve? ??Knowing the answer to these questions will help you create a precise prompt, which will produce highly relevant content for your audience.

Let’s say you are a global impact leader who is speaking at a climate change conference.?When you create a vague prompt like “What are the top problems that result from carbon emissions?”, Generative AI produces a general list of 10 issues.?Reciting this list may be valuable to some of your audience and a complete waste of time for the rest. ?

Instead, take the time to learn the details of the problems they are facing.?Let’s say that you learn your audience is made up of agricultural professionals. You can create a specific relevant prompt: “What are the top ways to maintain crop yield when faced with rising temperatures in our region?” ?

[Message Delivery Tip]

Take the time to understand why your audience has come to hear you deliver the presentation.?They are looking for elements of Relatability and Empathy.?Are you one of them??Have you faced similar problems??Have you experienced the difficult emotions when confronted with the problem? ?

This is a great opportunity to highlight the values you stand for. ?Audiences tend to trust leaders with whom they share similar values.?Also, look to share a personal story (of you solving the problem) or a case study (of you solving the problem for a client).?Audiences look to follow leaders who have successfully made it to the finish line.

2) Curate the Essential

Generative AI is excellent at providing the first draft of your presentation.?It is your job to sift through the first draft and only select the essential portions for your presentation.?Generative AI may produce a list of 10 best practices that you can speed through.?Consider the “less is more” concept.?Focus on teaching the 1-2 best practices that will make the largest impact in the lives of your audience.

[Generative AI Tip]

Generative AI may produce a list of 10 best practices that you can speed through.?Consider the “less is more” concept.?Focus on teaching the 1-2 best practices that will make the largest impact in the lives of your audience.?Two tips to curate content:

Consider the expertise level of your audience.?At industry conferences, there is often a high level of expertise in your audience.?They may have a grasp on the basic best practices, and giving you the opportunity to explore in-depth advanced practices.?At general conferences like TEDx, you will find a much lower level of expertise. ?Effective presenters will empower the audience to walk away with one achievable best practice.

Consider the amount of time you have on stage.?At an industry conference, you may be give 60 minutes to deliver a breakout session.?Use the “power of three” principle, and aim to elevate your audiences level of expertise in three of the best practices.?With short form presentations (TED talk, investor presentations), make the focus about the most impactful best practice.

[Message Delivery Tip]

Once again, revisit why your audience has come to hear you deliver the presentation.?They are?looking for elements of Expertise and Passion.?Do you know your topic well??How much do you care about the topic?

If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough. -Albert Einstein

As an expert in your field, you take the stage with the capacity to fill any amount of stage time.?Many experts make the mistake of cramming in as much information as possible, in an attempt to deliver maximum value to the audience.?However, maximum content often leads to overwhelm and confusion. ?

Be a great curator of content.?If your audience is able to take and pass a simple multiple choice quiz, you have succeeded! ?They walk away with confidence and the desire to learn more from you.

“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care” - Henry Ford

Deliver your content with boldness and enthusiasm.?Make sure your audience sees the passion in your face, hears it in your voice, and feels it from your energy.?Make the time to practice, practice and practice some more.?With regular practice, you are able to move beyond the memorized words in your head, and into the hearts and minds of your audience.

3) Connect with Hearts and Minds

Generative AI performs well at content generation, but currently does a poor job at creating audience comprehension and engagement.?Today’s best leaders are able to connect audiences to the content being presented.

[Generative AI Tip]

During the presentation, stay focused on the content you have curated for the audience.?With any presentation, you will receive a full range of questions from your audience.?It’s your job to answer the highly relevant questions, and make your answer apply to the majority of your audience.

However, you may receive some questions that are highly advanced or questions that require time beyond the time you have on stage.?Often, you will receive questions that are poorly formed or even off-topic.?

Record these questions, and consider using Generative AI to help you form and share answers after your presentation.?This gives you the opportunity to selectively engage with audience members with whom you wish to form a deeper relationship.

[Message Delivery Tip]

The audience came to hear you deliver the presentation. ?Otherwise, they could read a book, watch a YouTube video, or directly use Generative AI to search for answers.

The reason they invest their time with you is the promise to experience Comprehension and Engagement.

Effective presenters create comprehension with a variety of tools.?Stories bring the material alive.?Frameworks helps to accelerate learning and maximize retention.?Metaphors map new content to pre-existing knowledge and experiences in your audience.

I hear and I forget.?I see and I remember.?I do and I understand. - Confucius

To provide maximum value for the time your audience has invested, give them the opportunity to engage with your content.?Effective teachers give their students opportunities to immediately apply the content in low risk “practice” exercises.?The goal is to achieve a baseline of understanding and confidence, and leave the audience wanting to learn more!
