How to Prepare Your Resume: A Quick & Easy Guide

How to Prepare Your Resume: A Quick & Easy Guide

The secret nobody knows :

The Resume - any resume - gets only an 8-second “glance” from any recruiter and nothing more. This has a huge impact in terms of how anyone should prepare his/ her resume.

So, what should you do?

  • Keep your resume to one page. Especially if you have less than 5 -6 years of experience. This is an absolute must in case you are a fresher. Nobody has the time to read more
  • Keep the formatting simple and visually appealing
  • Ensure that your skills jump out of the resume to catch the eyes of the recruiter in that 8 second glance
  • The first half of your resume: tightly focus on a specific target job, add a Targeted Job Title, Performance Profile, Professional Competencies, and Career Highlight sections.
  • This helps the recruiter to quickly grasp what you have done.

Ask yourself the following questions - to cut down unnecessary things from your Resume & to create space for more important things:

  • Are my skills and experiences relevant to the target job?
  • Is there any area where I repeated myself? Can I cut it down?
  • Can I cut out any paragraphs?
  • Can I cut out any sentences?
  • Can I shorten two sentences into one? If not, perhaps I can break that one long sentence into two short ones? Can I cut out any words?
  • Can I cut out any pronouns?
  • And, refine and polish your resume again!

Match the keywords to your resume:

  • Match the job description against your resume
  • See if the words you use to describe your skills match the words the employer is using.
  • Look at how the job posting requirement of, say, “work closely with others,” applies to each of the employer’s specific skill requirements that require you to interact with other people and other departments to get your work done.
  • For example, an accountant working with accounts receivable might, on hearing “work closely with others,” think about problem accounts and working with sales and nonpaying customers, as well as working laterally and upward within the accounting department.
  • Think about how you worked as a team, along with students from different departments to get that college fest going – if you can put it on paper and bring it alive, that is what “work closely with others” would mean in a college context
  • When you think through your work experience and discover achievements that speak directly to the stated needs of an employer, you can draw attention to your close match in your resume.
