How to prepare for your next interview

Preparing for an interview can be a daunting task. It’s important to know what you should say, how to answer questions, and what questions you should ask the interviewer. To help make this process easier, here are some top tips for interview preparation.

It’s important to know what questions you should ask the interviewer, how to answer their questions with confidence, and what topics you should cover in your answers. Researching common interview questions and practicing your answers can help make this process easier so that you can show off your best self during the interview.

First, research the company and the position you are applying for. This will help you understand what the interviewer is looking for and give you a better understanding of what to expect during your interview. Things to consider are the values of the organisation and what is it about the company that interests you. How do you align with these values and how do you demonstrate them?

Next, practice talking through your experience from your resume - you need to do this in under 4 minutes! Yes, under 4 minutes. Keep it concise and finish up with your current role. This should segway nicely into the role you are now applying for and why this previous experience brings you to this point in your career.

Next practice your answers to possible behavioral-based questions using the STAR technique. This will help build your confidence and make sure that you’re prepared when it comes time to answer them in the actual interview. Prepare a list of questions that you can ask the interviewer at the end of your meeting. This will show that you have done your homework and are truly interested in the position.

Finally, with all of this preparation don’t forget to think about some rapport-building skills for those awkward moments in the lift going to the meeting room or whilst waiting for a second-panel member to join the interview room! Why would they want to sit next to you for the next 4 years?! So think about your interests, what did you do at the weekend apart from watching MasterChef?! Perhaps some of these interests and activities outside of work demonstrate the character traits they are seeking.

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to acing any job interview!
