How to Prepare for Your Estate Planning Consultation
Stephanie Hartman Rojo, Esq.

You've come to terms with the fact that you need an estate plan to avoid a probate and various probate pitfalls. What steps should you take next?
- Schedule your appointment with an estate planning attorney/firm and make sure you have a copy of the firm's workbook. Most firms will provide this to you in paper or as a digital fillable form.
- Take time to fill out your workbook with thoughtful responses. Here you'll provide helpful information about yourself, your family, preferred beneficiaries and their alternates, preferred fiduciaries and backup fiduciaries, contact information for advisors, and your existing assets/debts. Not exactly sure who to pick or what to give? No problem. Make a list of potential options and your attorney will guide you through various scenarios to help you get to your ideal plan.
- To avoid forgetting things in the moment, identify and list out your questions or concerns in anticipation of the meeting. (Don't forget to bring them with you!)
- Forward your existing estate plan documents, if any, and your completed workbook to the attorney's office in advance of the consultation.
- Show up for your consultation. By the end of the conversation you should know what your estate planning options are, what the process looks like, how much the attorney's services cost, and whether you have any additional homework to complete in advance of your signing appointment.
