How to Prepare for TOEFL? (Free Links & Tests)

mostly for those who cannot remember gorgeous words... like me...

???????? ??: ?????????????????????? ?????? ??????

(check if your college need that!)

  • I have talked about GRE preparation here .

???????? ??: ?????????????????????? ?????? ??????????

I personally felt TOEFL was exciting & fun than GRE in terms of the demand in verbal. There are 4 sections in TOEFL with a break of 10 minutes in between.

(Goal: Get used to the Pattern of the Test)

I personally felt that the practice tests by TOEFL IBT are the best way to understand how the tests actually happen. You may find them

But you might test your luck to surf the internet and get it for free. :)

Although, you may find some free tests here:

Use the TOEFL free test to get used to the interface. It helps a lot, a lot! a lot!

It is similar to reading comprehension in school.

- On average 10 MCQs for each passage, 3-4 passages

- Based on the specific sections of the passages there will be mostly mcqs.

- There will be some synonyms and antonyms and overall analysis questions.

- ??????????????????: Eliminate rather than Select. The options are meant to be tricky, rather than straightforward. All the options may seem to be correct. You have to eliminate to get to the most likely one.

- ?????????? ?????? ????????ance:

Take notes! Use your paper to write down the keywords. You have to be fast!

2?? ?????????????????? ??????????????

- In the listening, you have to listen to conversations, and answer questions.

Write down all the points and tips & techniques after finding and going through the links I have shared. The techniques help a lot in TOEF Preparation. Understand that you will not get access to the audio unlike the text in the reading section, so take down notes & keywords from the passage you hear. Learn to use mind maps to remember. Check out the various types of questions you need to answer for each passage.

3?? ??????????

Use the break to lighten up. If you are hungry, have light food. The adrenaline in you will not let you feel your appetite.

Since I am teaching for a long time, speaking section was not hard to grasp. But, the general issue is that you have to think fast within 15 seconds, and talk fast within a minute. So, you have to prepare a set of techniques and frameworks to answer the questions, and think. Here are a few of them, I have researched online, and found them.

Goal: Set up Templates after reading online and going through the types for each type of question. You will not have time to think at that point. Just prepare the templates and implement the techniques.

Here a few templates for speaking, I have found out after research, and made for myself.

1. Personal?Choice

Question

Template

  • I agree/I disagree with the idea.?
  • I think/feel this way for several reasons.
  • First reason First, + example (personal experience with a conclusion supporting the statement)
  • Second Reason. Second, + another example (more details)

2. Campus Announcement

Read + Notes → Hear + Notes?

  • According to the article/ letter, tell about the change.
  • Give the reasons told in the letter for the change.
  • Transition: The person supports/opposes it.
  • First reason.
  • Second reason.

3. General to?Specific

Read + Notes → Hear + Notes?

  • The article addresses/discusses (title)?
  • The reading states?
  • The professor illustrates this with one/two examples.
  • Explain the examples.
  • And, these examples clearly explain?_____

4. Academic?Lecture

Hear + Notes?

  • The lecture is about ____?, which is ________
  • First, the professor says that?…
  • Secondly, the professor adds?…

Mainly use points to speak. Introduction -> Point 1 -> Point 2 -> Point 3 -> Conclusion. Simple. Just practice.

Practice a lot in successfully doing the 15 - 45 seconds rule to think and speak. Jot down the points, and speak! Practice, and practice as much as you can. TOEFL will seem easy as you practice more, because your templates will be ready!

5?? ?????????????? ??????????????

This is the easiest of all. This is similar to GRE Analytical thing. TOEFL’s writing task is easier than GRE, because all then want from you is a cohesive structure in your writing. Avoid spelling mistakes like plague and grammatical mistakes like the Ebola. You’re not expected to be a grammar Nazi, but you should avoid common grammatical mistakes. The foremost point — Type as much as you can!?Higher word count = higher marks.?However, don’t boost the word count by unnecessary words like, “So” or using a large number of adverbs.?Reading section has only one complicated part — Writing the Summary of the passage. Practice this part for as many passages as your patience permits, because this is the only place where you can lose marks.

I used one week for TOEFL Preparation. Try to reduce the gap between GRE and TOEFL data selection, since the GRE Verbal Preparation will help you in TOEFL Preparation, but if you have not, it is fine.

Section Name = {Reading, Speaking, Listening, Writing}

Make your own notes / cheatsheet of techniques after researching.

All the best! I enjoyed TOEFL more than GRE.
