“Focus on what you can control and leave the rest to God.”
“Focus on what you can control and leave the rest to?God.”
Today, I want to talk about the job search process and common mistakes candidates make that lead to rejection. As always, I won’t just share generic information?—?what I’m offering comes from my own experience and real data.
The Truth About Job Hunting: It’s Not?Easy
Finding a job isn’t as simple as it seems. It takes careful preparation. My friend was a tech lead who worked at Amazon once said, “If I applied to Amazon again today, I probably wouldn’t pass the interview, even though I’m highly skilled.” This shows that even having strong technical knowledge doesn’t guarantee success. The process matters: first, my resume needs to be selected, then I’ll have an HR phone screening, followed by technical interviews, and finally, either an offer or rejection.
There are two main factors at play here: what I can control and what I can’t. Let’s focus on what I can control.
Real Story of Perseverance: Gunjan?Saxena
Before diving into the specifics, I want to share a powerful story that deeply impacted me. Since I am working with my Indian colleagues, I became interested in their culture and started watching Indian films. One film that stood out to me was Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl.
She worked hard to become a pilot, losing weight to meet physical requirements. However, her application was rejected because she was considered too short. This was a devastating blow to her aspirations. Just as she was about to give up, her father stepped in and gave her the most pivotal advice of her life: “Focus on what you can control, and leave the rest to God.”
These words reignited her spirit. With her father’s support, Gunjan refused to give up. She fought through every obstacle and eventually secured her place in the Indian Air Force, becoming a combat pilot. Her bravery during the Kargil War made her a national hero.
Gunjan Saxena’s story is not just about one woman’s success; it’s a life lesson in how focusing on what we can control can lead us to achieve what once seemed impossible.
Control What You Can in Your Job?Search?
I’m sharing this story because that quote has stayed with me: “Focus on what you can control.” So, in the context of job searching, I asked myself?—?am I focusing on what’s within my control?
Why Aren’t Recruiters Calling Me?Back?
Here are the key things that we should ask and start looking at:
Important: Please ask yourself? If I’m doing all of the above, chances are I’ll start getting interview requests. But this is just the beginning?—?the next steps are where things get tricky.
HR Screening: Why I was rejected?
Let’s say you’ve got an HR phone call or Zoom screening lined up?—?what could you have missed that led to rejection? Please ask yourself?
Important: If I’ve taken care of these steps, I’m likely to move forward to the technical interview round. But this is where the real pressure begins.
Technical Interview: The Final Destination!
Now, you need to ask yourself some critical questions to avoid failing this round:
If the answer to these questions is yes, then you’ve likely made a strong impression and increased my chances of standing out.
