How to prepare for promotion in a job avoiding common public speaking mistakes

Here's how you can avoid common public speaking mistakes and increase your chances of getting a promotion.

?

I recently mentored a senior executive working with Ernst & Young who was due for a promotion. He had to sit with a 6-panel members team where they asked him to give a 10–15-minute presentation followed by some questions related to his overall contribution, performance, innovation, and leadership.

?

And I coached and mentored him for this requirement. We worked until we got the news that his promotion was approved.

?

What we followed and how I mentored him is what I am going to share with you here.

?

1. Apply correct body language and gestures. Work on it.

2. Clear context of presentation - the central idea of the talk is critical

3. Prepare a few questions which are the highlights from his work and achievements.Practice in a video. Listen to your answers and assess it.

4. Use the frameworks in public speaking while you explain a key point – for example – 3 C’s – Commit, Communicate, Calliberate

5. Explain your points with examples and anecdotes. Detail it where it's applicable. Don't leave it just by saying the key point.

Incorrect: By following instructions from our boss we managed to handle the client.

Correct: One fine day, a client came up with a tough query. I connected with my boss Sameer and we sat down and followed a critical analysis. We found that the client only wants a simple reply to this question rather than a detailed technical answer. The next day, I sat with the client, I listened to the client, and politely answered him applying conversation skills this year not only did we retain the client but he is presently the highest revenue giver to the department. One small suggestion from leadership makes a wholesome difference.

Follow this and avoid common public speaking mistakes and increase your chances of getting a promotion.
