How to prepare for a long, turbulent job search?

How to prepare for a long, turbulent job search?

Hot Takes from our Wednesday show. If you haven't seen the show, I embedded it below. Enjoy!

1. This article is pointing towards longer average unemployment.

Agree or disagree?

Are job seekers, career changers, and employed professionals prepared for the turbulence?

Many are not ready because they think:

Someone will save them

Procrastination is habitual and people will put off until late.

How does the job search affect those looking before COVID19?

Keep going

Proceed like the job search is your job.

"Stop looking in the rearview mirror..." ~Jack (19:05)

Take "no" and/or rejection as useful information (20:13) ~Mark

The weight of "NO" doesn't have to de-habilitate. (21:17)~Mark

How does one stand out as a top candidate? (22:47)

2. Discussing politics online, workplace, and to potential employers, um, you might want to air on the side of caution?

"Politics now is so polarizing."~Jack (31:00)

"It doesn't make sense to engage."

What you say, and the way you say it could be damaging? Yes. Even by association, your involvement in a conversation it could potentially alienate employers.

The way you respond to visceral attacks or different opinions may be insightful in the wrong way

Avoiding at all costs is safe, but is it necessary

It's about judgment (35:11)

Even changing your Facebook page in spite of changing to a moniker, won't protect your polarizing comments and engagement

(38:00)

3. What ifs...

Contingent on industries affected, but from the last recession, we saw part-time jobs becoming readily available before full-time jobs.

Having several PT jobs was a trend before COVID

Job restructuring can become a trend again

- What if employers created two part-time positions to avoid insurance costs

- What if employers made many workers (including older workers) 1099s (46:00)

- Automated Intelligence (not Artificial Intelligence) - Closings of non-essential businesses may find ways to avoid the human touch

(53:17)

4. Quit your pitching!

Nothing wrong with a sales pitch, but it's not the first conversation nobody I know wants to have on LinkedIn

- Even user headlines are tip-offs to rocky and strange connections

- Users can't wait to see how "we can add value to each other"

(59:55)

5. What's your best end of the year (or holiday) job search tactic?

I like the out-takes! And yes, the spammy, salesy contact messages are getting to be too much.
