How to Prepare for the 'HR/Partner Interview' of the Assessment Centre

First off, thank you for being here—whether you've been with us since the early days or just joined the crew, your support means the world to us and we are excited to be part of your journey.

Welcome to another edition of The Job Seeker Hub newsletter! Last week, we discussed how to prepare for the Case Study of the Assessment Center. Today’s newsletter will be on how to prepare for the HR/Partner Interview of the AC. This is the fourth edition of our Assessment Center series. Links to be previous editions will be found at the bottom of this newsletter.

1. Understand the Purpose

The HR/Partner interview is about cultural fit as much as it is about competence. While the technical skills got you this far, this interview assesses whether you're the right person to represent the company and thrive in its environment.

What they’re looking for:

  • Alignment with company values: Do you embody what the company stands for?
  • Long-term potential: Can they see you growing within the organization?
  • Interpersonal skills: How well do you communicate and build relationships?

2. Reflect on Your Journey

Before the interview, take some time to reflect on your career journey, values, and experiences. Be ready to articulate your story with authenticity. Before attending the assessment center, I would recommend reflecting on all of your work experiences (whether it is your part-time job at KFC or a three-day insight you attended a month ago) and write down your achievements for each of them and the skills and knowledge you gained. When answering the questions, try to highlight what YOU can bring to the company what can what the company can do for you.

Tips for crafting your story:

  • Key achievements: Highlight significant milestones that showcase your strengths.
  • Lessons learned: Don’t shy away from challenges you’ve faced and how they’ve shaped you.
  • Values alignment: Identify aspects of the company culture that resonate with you and weave them into your narrative.

3. Prepare for Common Questions

While every interview is unique, some questions are almost guaranteed to pop up. Preparation is key to answering them confidently and concisely. We covered interview prep in-depth in four editions a while back. You can find the link to each edition in the ‘How to prepare for Hirevue Interview’ article, which is linked below.

Common questions:

  • “Tell me about yourself.” This isn’t just a warm-up. It’s your chance to set the tone. Start strong with a brief overview of your professional journey, focusing on the most relevant experiences.
  • “Why do you want to work here?” Go beyond the surface. Demonstrate that you’ve done your research and explain how the company’s values, projects, or mission align with your personal and professional goals. If you have attended an event with the company or met someone who works there, this is your chance to mention it.
  • “Describe a time when you faced a challenge at work and how you handled it.” Choose a situation that highlights problem-solving, adaptability, and resilience. Structure your answer using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) for clarity.

4. Questions to Ask Them

Remember, an interview is a two-way street. Asking thoughtful questions can demonstrate your genuine interest in the role and company. Always have two to four questions to ask at the end of the questions and do NOT ask questions that can be easily found online. If you cannot think of questions to ask, you may ask the interviewer(s) about their experience at the company or a project they are currently working on.

Smart questions to consider:

  • “What are the key challenges the company is currently facing?” Shows that you’re thinking beyond your role and considering the bigger picture.
  • “How do you see this role evolving in the next few years?” Indicates you’re thinking long-term and are interested in growth opportunities.
  • “Can you share some insights into the team culture?” This gives you a sense of whether you’ll thrive in their environment.

5. Be Authentic

Lastly, be yourself. It's tempting to try to mold yourself into what you think the interviewers want, but authenticity is your best asset. Let your true personality shine through—it's the only way to ensure you end up in a place where you'll be happy and successful. Research to company’s values and try to embody them in your answers.

Remember: They’re not just evaluating your skills; they’re evaluating whether you’re the kind of person they’d enjoy working with every day. Authenticity breeds connection, and that’s the ultimate goal.

Final Thoughts

Preparing for the HR/Partner interview is less about memorizing answers and more about understanding who you are and how you align with the company. Stay calm, be prepared, and let your authentic self lead the way.
