How to Prepare a Great Presentation

How to Prepare a Great Presentation

Delivering your next speech, talk or presentation can often feel overwhelming. We are often concerned that it may not be engaging, interesting, or worse still, boring.

The good news is with these three strategies you can avoid these problems and make your next talk something everyone wants to listen to.

  1. Choose your subject

Try to choose something that you have some genuine interest in. When you find something, however small, that you enjoy or are interested in, your energy will increase and your passion will be much clearer when you speak. If the subject does not excite you, for example if you have been asked to speak about something, then you can always seek to find something interesting and exciting in it. There is always something in every subject or topic. Look for this, then elaborate on it during your talk.

2. Know your audience

Find out what the other people in the meeting or your audience already understand about the subject. Then ask yourself: What do they want from this meeting or from my presentation? What could be of value to them? When you have this information, you can ensure you won't bore them by repeating what they already know. Also you can make sure it's relevant and interesting to them.

3. Aim to teach

Perhaps the most important part of preparation is to focus on teaching something. Once you understand strategy two, this will help you prepare new learnings for the others. Teaching something to someone else or others is an act of service and usually results in high engagement, interest and enjoyment for everyone. Teaching also brings great purpose to your project and presentation.
