What's Next for OpenAI with Sam Altman Back in Charge?

Last week was stranger than normal in the world of AI: For a brief few days, Sam Altman worked for Microsoft, more than 700 OpenAI employees threatened to quit, and OpenAI proposed a merger with Anthropic, the creator of Claude. The irony on that last one is that Anthropic was started by former OpenAI employees, who left due to differences over the safety of AI’s future.?

You’d be forgiven for wondering if Altman’s firing was just an AI hallucination — after a week of chaotic news that had everyone speculating about the damage to the company and AI development, Altman is back. OpenAI also has a new board, and it seems like we can expect AI technology developments to move even faster and more furious.?

?? Prepping leaders for media interviews?

What’s happening: Back in September, ChatGPT got the ability to communicate with users in audio form. Paid users could speak to the chatbot through the ChatGPT mobile app as if it were Apple’s Siri or Amazon’s Alexa, but with all the added capabilities of OpenAI’s large language model. Last week, the voice chat feature became available to free users, too.?

Why it matters: ChatGPT as an audio experience unlocks a new use: Replicating media interviews. This can be especially helpful if you’re looking to prepare subject matter experts who don’t typically interact with reporters or haven’t gone through media training. It allows the SME to practice vocal delivery, tone, pacing, and core messaging.

Try it out: To use the audio functionality, load the ChatGPT mobile app and click on the headphone icon in the lower-right corner. Then you can start speaking. Start off with something like this (adapted to your desired topic, of course): “Imagine you’re a reporter at the Wall Street Journal writing a story about paper production. Ask me, the CEO of Acme Tree Cutting, pressing questions about how paper is made and how the industry is changing.”

Note that ChatGPT doesn’t record audio of the conversations, so if you want to analyze the SME’s performance afterward, you’ll need to use a voice recording app. This can give the SME insight into how they sound, and what pointers you’d want to give them for the real interview. The questions may not be as hard-hitting as the real deal, but the exercise is a low-stakes way to see how an expert handles being asked questions on the spot.?

Quote of the Week

“This is the first time that we have seen an affirmation that these capabilities should not just be about cool features and how quickly we can get them to market or how we can compete to drive down costs. … (It’s) an agreement that the most important thing that needs to be done at the design phase is security.”

— U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency Director Jen Easterly to Reuters on a new agreement between the U.S. and more than a dozen countries about safety in AI
