How to practice self-care as an entrepreneur

We’re a few days into #mentalhealthawareness month. So we wanted to highlight a very important point that was mentioned by our guest, Nima Sophia Tisdall (the founder of Blue Lobster ), when she joined us on the show last year:

It is vital to ensure that you practice self-care as an entrepreneur. You will only be able to operate effectively if you look after yourself.

Stress, loneliness, overwhelm, and burnout are common among entrepreneurs (particularly in the early stages, although often even in the later stages too).

However, it doesn’t have to be that way. Yes, entrepreneurship is always going to be full of challenges, but there are ways to make those challenges more manageable. These include:

  • Set boundaries: give yourself working hours, turn off your notifications after a certain time, and don’t feel bad about it!
  • Spend time with your loved ones: We are social creatures that need to interact with others (not just in a work setting) to experience happiness, so don’t let your business get in the way of your relationships.
  • Exercise regularly: not only does exercise keep you physically healthy, but it also releases endorphins which enhance your mood. Run, walk, swim, practice yoga; whatever floats your boat, as long as you are moving your body!
  • Get enough sleep: you may think you can function well on minimal sleep, but over time, this will begin to have a negative impact on your mood, your ability to cope with stressors, and your cognitive functioning.
  • Learn to delegate: although it can be hard to let go, you can’t do everything in your business on your own without burning out. So, hire talented, trustworthy people who can take the load off you.

By taking your mental health seriously and implementing these strategies, you can improve your overall well-being and thrive as an entrepreneur! And you can enjoy the full episode with Nima about innovative disruption for a better world wherever you get your podcasts!
