How To Power Up Your Pitch With Story

How To Power Up Your Pitch With Story

You give presentations over and over, with the hopes that it will get you business, or at least someone who is willing to learn more. The problem is that most people in this situation will rely on facts and then more facts. But facts don't give you the premium impact that story will. But learning how to tell stories can be a long journey (and I would say worth the trip) sometimes you just need a quick fix. Here's?your?quick fix.

Before we jump in, let's all get on the same page. Most of us are?pitching a product, a service, an idea, etc. But that's the outcome we want. Let's narrow it down and say that what we are really selling?is?a new way of thinking about a problem they have - a new solution. I'm hoping you are already pretty clear on that "one idea" that you really want to land in this presentation and how it solves a problem or gets them something they want.??The only reason I'm bringing it?up, is that this quick fix depends on you knowing the solution you bring to them, instead of just a topic you're talking about. Moving on...

The next time you give a presentation, open it?up?by explaining why this solution (product, idea, etc.)??matters so much to you personally. You can even say, "Before I get started explaining how this all works, I would like to talk about why it matters to me personally, and why it might matter to you personally."

Then give me an example from?your?own life, or a client you worked with, or someone close to you. Tell me how this person had a specific problem and a desire, and it made them feel a certain way, and here is how?your?company/product was able to help. And then tell us how you felt being part of that project and give us a reason why you love working for this company, because it allows you to help people who are struggling with problems like this (maybe name a few more related) and how you hope that someone here today sees a way to look at their particular issue in a new light.

Doing something this simple will have a profound impact on?your?audience. It will put a human face on?your?company, the brand, YOU, and the people you help. This helps create trust quickly among strangers.
