How post-millennials use social media
When talking with my children (ages 20, 18, 17, 15, 13, 10) I discovered they have a clear use for each social media platform. No-one told them what to use them for, this knowledge is not explicit but just the 'norm'.
The list is below for those who might be interested in seeing what they said. But from a business perspective, what can we learn from this? Here are my initial thoughts...
- Post-millennials are comfortable using multiple applications, you don't need to be all things to all people, in fact that's a negative, be specific and have a clear use.
- Post-millennials don't have a strong attachment to any one application. Loyalty is driven by relevancy.
- Regardless of your marketing the herd will determine what your purpose is. If your business model is not aligned, there is a problem waiting down the road.
I'm sure there are many other observations to be made, interested to hear what other's make of this. How do you use your social media platforms?
Instagram - post memories, usually only a couple of pictures from a day out/get together/etc. See what friends have done.
Facebook - post memories from a holiday or event if there are loads of pictures for a whole album, create events, take part in groups, more organisational and calendar based.
Twitter - post thoughts/observations, more for funny and personal things, also to be part of a wider community of like-minded people, usually how I find out world news.
Snapchat - informal, use to send pictures of a funny moment that I found funny or something I have seen that someone else would like, not for anything serious.
LinkedIn - rarely use but feel like I should have it at least, would use to find jobs.
Whatsapp - use for family groups or for groups where not everyone has an iphone.
Messenger (facebook) - less personal than texting, use for group chats or for contacting people I don't really know/have just met.
Pinterest - for ideas.
Youtube - to find music.
Marcopolo - quick messages.
