How To Position Yourself For A Salary Increase In Q3

The month has barely started and all I can hear is "Q3, Q3, Q3!!!" My first thought - "Okay! Looks like everyone is really excited about this quarter. Is there something I'm missing???" So I took my time to think about it, and then I realized that it's not exactly the thought of work that's getting everyone excited, it's the hope to be able to accomplish more! To review/set new goals and find the passion again, to begin again, if you have to and to prove to yourself that you are who you think you are.

So on that note, I thought I'd help you with a little pick-me-up to get you started. If you've put in so much work at your job already and you know that you're due for a raise, there are many factors that can influence your chances of getting that increase - your performance, your qualifications, your timing and your negotiation skills. Here are some tips that might help you position yourself for a raise in this third quarter:

  • Develop a written plan. Outline your goals, achievements, contributions and expectations for the next quarter. Be specific and realistic about what you want and why you deserve it.?Share your plan with your boss and ask for feedback.
  • Learn when the company performs salary reviews. Find out the process and timeline for compensation adjustments and make sure you initiate the discussion before the window closes.?Ask HR or your manager about the review cycle and the criteria for raises.
  • Leverage your big accomplishments. If you have recently completed a successful project, landed a big client, saved money or improved efficiency, use that as an opportunity to showcase your value and ask for a raise.?Highlight how your work aligns with the company’s goals and vision.
  • Gain more qualifications. The more skills and knowledge you have, the more valuable you are as an employee. Consider taking additional courses, certifications or training programs that are relevant to your field or industry.?This can demonstrate your initiative, commitment and potential to your employer.
  • Work on your communication skills. Being able to communicate effectively is essential for any job, especially when asking for a raise. Practice your pitch beforehand and anticipate possible objections or questions. Be confident, polite and respectful during the conversation.?Use data and evidence to support your request.

I hope these tips are helpful for you. Good luck with your salary negotiation!
