How to Position Yourself as an Expert

Becoming an expert doesn’t just happen overnight. It’s a gradual process. In this competitive world of creators, entrepreneurs, coaches, marketing gurus, digital transformation, and many more, you begin to wonder, where do I start? How can you compete with these gurus and experts in the same field as you? The truth is that whether you are a start-up or you have been in business for a while, it’s essential to find a way to catch the attention of the people who matter, which might be your customers, potential brand partners, collaborators, or more.

To make your business a success, you need to learn how to come across as an expert to the people who can make all the difference to your business. It means building your personal brand to become an authority figure in your industry through positioning, consistency, and gaining the like-trust factor (credibility)

So, how can you position yourself as an expert in your niche or industry?

First, answer the following questions:

  • What subject am I most confident to talk about and teach within my industry or niche? For instance, I am a business coach and passionate about helping small business owners leverage their ideas/offers so they can show up confidently and call in a consistent flow of income. So, I love to talk about brand identity, packaging, offerings, how to be successful as an entrepreneur, etc. So, now it’s your turn to write a few topics you are most confident in teaching.
  • Who in your industry or niche market do you admire so much (you admire them because you share the same values)? When you take a close look, you can draw inspiration from them to help you build your confidence because they speak your language??
  • Why do you trust these people? It must be that they know their stuff and they have come across as the authority. That’s where you want to be.

10 Tips to Come Across as an Expert

Do you want to become an expert in something? You’ll probably be surprised that it’s easier than expected. Whether you are already on your path towards expertise or just beginning, here are ten essential tips to become and come across as an expert.

Consistency Is Key

Consistency is key to success

Just like Rome wasn’t built in a day, you won’t become an expert overnight. Consistency is absolutely vital to making this happen. You should set aside time to work on personal development each and every day. Malcolm Gladwell famously proclaimed that it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert. The reality is probably quite a bit shorter, but it gives you a sense of the need to learn continually.

Be Visible

Expertise is most valuable when other people recognise it. After all, how valuable is your expertise if you aren’t actively sharing it? Even if you aren’t yet an expert, it is important to be visible. Begin networking and building connections. This can help you find collaborators and open up opportunities in the future as you hone your expertise.

Start Broad, Then Niche Down

Expertise is always built through a very specific formula. You must start broad and then find your niche. This is even how formal education is structured. An undergraduate degree gives you a broad knowledge base, while graduate study focuses intently on a singular, narrowed area. In fact, nearly every expert you meet is an expert in a highly specific area. Begin with broad learning and then find the area where you can provide the most value for further study.

Keep Studying & Stay Informed

Of course, experts only remain experts by ensuring they stay up to date in their fields. The world is changing rapidly, particularly with new technology. Think about it – smartphones, social media, and Wi-Fi are all relatively new things but have drastically changed how business works. So once you’re an expert, continue to learn and stay informed of the changes in your field.

Stay Concise & Stay Relevant

One of the most challenging things for experts to do is to truly connect with people who aren’t experts in that same field. This is simply a hazard of the job. The people who are able to do this tend to become extremely successful. This is something Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and many others have in common. Find a way to make your information relevant to your audience, helping them apply it to their lives. Pair this with communicating concisely and sticking to the major points, and you have a recipe for success.

Value Your Expertise & Others Will Too

Most of us realise that self-confidence is extremely important. This is even true if you are an expert in something. If you project confidence and knowledge, people will trust your experience. This will also help you build the connections that are so very important for increasing your outreach. As others begin to value your expertise, they will spread the word of your ability for you. Word of mouth is a powerful PR tool.

Avoid the Hard Sell

Many people in business try to focus on the hard sell, valuing immediate profit over long-term potential. This is a recipe for short-term success. True success lies in relationships. Instead of focusing on the hard sell, lay the groundwork for a long, fruitful relationship. This will lead to mutual trust and more money down the road. If you successfully showcase your knowledge, experience, and expertise, sales will come.

Be Ready & Available (and Stick to Stuff You Know)

One of the biggest mistakes people can make is to branch out past their areas of expertise. We see this often in business. Elon Musk is a great example. He created many successful companies that made products. Recently, he branched into the tech sector and has learned a difficult lesson about going too far away from your areas of expertise. While you should always be ready to showcase your knowledge and available opportunities, you must be cautious not to get involved in something you aren’t familiar with. The best experts know their weaknesses but concentrate their energy on their strengths.

Optimise Your Online Presence

The importance of having an active, engaging online presence is here to stay. Influencers often get some shade from society. However, they have mastered having a great online presence, which helps them succeed in their areas of expertise. Today, the best companies and most successful people in business also master the online game. In fact, Delta CEO Ed Bastian, Walmart CEO Doug McMillan, and GM CEO Mary Barra have all been lauded for their strong social media presence.

Be Confident, Calm, & Approachable

Finally, to truly broadcast your expertise to others, it is critical to be confident, calm, and approachable. People trust experts when they feel they can connect with them. Whether networking in person or online, the most successful experts appear down to earth. Make others feel like you want to help them and show them the value your expertise will bring.
