How to: Plan Your Renovation

How to: Plan Your Renovation

Hi all. Found an excellent article that I am sure many will relate to. Hope you get something useful out of this...

  • Dream it. Good news. Due to the glut of “reno inspo” that exists today you don’t have to pay an interior designer to create your dream home. You can just do it yourself. The sheer volume of ideas on Instagram and Pinterest make them irresistible platforms to spend hours on. And the specific search function means you can find exactly what you want — #whitewashedtimberfloors anyone? Collect, pin and screen shot images you like. Even if you don’t have a ‘good eye’, at least you’ll have something to show your friends, family and perhaps a professional to get their feedback and know if you’re on the right track.
  • Design it. Now that you have an idea of what your reno looks like in your dreams, it’s time to put pen to paper. This is a step you can DIY or get some help with from an architect or designer. Give it a go first with a pencil, ruler, paper and an eraser. It helps if you try and draw things to scale: 1cm = 1m. It’s around this time you also want to start narrowing down your design choices around fixtures and finishes like tapware, flooring, and tiles.
  • Cost it. Arguably this is the most important step in the planning process – knowing what you can afford to spend. And this number needs to sit firmly in your mind as you dream up and draw up your plans.

Articles such as this overly simplify the process of designing and renovating or building your own home. You may be able to find ideas and inspiration from Facebook and Instagram, however you can not replace the years of training, education and experience of engaging a professional designer. Design is not simply the creation of a collage. It takes many years to learn how to address issues of site, context, climate, environment, heritage, streetscape, and a multitude of other issues, not to mention townplanning and building regulations, structure, services co-ordination and the construction process itself. This is not something that anyone can just pick up a pencil and do themselves. Anyone reading this article and thinking of doing it, will be heading themselves into trouble and a high level of stress that could have been avoided by using a professional. The small amount of a professional architect or designers fee in the overall project cost, will more than make up for the time, cost and stress savings, and achieve a far better quality result.
