How to plan a maintenance schedule that's suited to your school

While any building exterior requires an ongoing maintenance schedule, creating a successful maintenance schedule for a school requires a specific and specialised approach, with extensive planning and organisation to ensure any works aren’t disruptive to day-to-day operations.

As Melbourne’s leading painting and render repair experts, we have worked with multiple schools to create comprehensive maintenance plans that suit their needs, while limiting disruption and controlling costs. Here are our four best tips.

Planning

If your school is due for a new coat of paint, it’s essential you start thinking about the process early.

Ideally, you’d start to bring together the details of project before the school term starts – it will give you a good idea of the scope and allow you to lock in your choice of painter early, before they start filling up.

It will also make it easier to plan exact painting times – freshly painted areas will need time to dry, so planning to do the bulk of the work during school holiday periods will give you the best chance of success.

Flexibility

While planning ahead is ideal, any school maintenance project should have an element of flexibility – it’s neither technically correct nor economically savvy to paint when there isn’t a need for it.

If the weather hasn’t been as extreme as previous years, and the paint quality has remained high, some surfaces may only need a wash and clean, rather than a fresh coat. Taking the time to establish exactly what is required year on year will save you time and effort in the long run.

Quality

There’s no point investing time and effort into a comprehensive maintenance schedule if you aren’t going to use the best materials. Therefore, it’s essential you work with your painter to choose a high-quality paint that will last until your next scheduled paint job.

In schools, light colours often work best. You’ll also need to make sure the paint is suited to your climate, environment and materials to ensure longevity.

Choose the right painter

As with any project, choosing the right painter can make a huge difference to your overall experience.

An inexperienced, poorly organised or low-quality painter can completely throw out your school’s maintenance schedule, so make sure you do your research and partner with a high-quality painter who is reliable in the long term. You don’t want to be left high and dry!
