How to Pick a Niche for Your Marketing Business: Why I Switched from the Entertainment Industry

It was a difficult decision to make, but I knew I had to switch my marketing business niche. It was just time, people. For years, nearly 18 years (!), I had been working in the entertainment industry, on projects like Star Wars, UFC, Hobby Lobby, Monty Python, Ultra Records, Universal Music and more. Like a lot of solid marketers with that many years, there was a lot more, but there were hard times, and while it was a lot of fun, the long lead times to success were wearing on me.

In addition, business development was always a challenge and I wasn't seeing the success with clients that I wanted. So I decided to focus on something new and different - something that I could make an impact with my skillset. And that's how I ended up choosing the niche of marketing for small businesses. It's why I started the book and it's why I started the course. After my time in Miami, I realized that I had a real passion for smaller businesses because I could see the immediate returns on my work. The ROI was evident.

It was a rewarding feeling.

In fact, my favorite work was the charity work that we conducted there at Miami Lighthouse for the Blind - still the most rewarding stuff that I have done to this day.

I didn't have that with entertainment clients.

Since making the switch, I haven't looked back.

I'm loving the work that I'm doing and the clients that I'm working with.

In addition, the lead times to success are much shorter and business development is a breeze.

Small businesses need all the help they can get, and you could be the one to provide it.

If you're thinking about switching your marketing niche, there are a few things to consider.

  • First, what is your skill set? What are you good at?
  • Second, what are you passionate about? What do you enjoy doing?
  • Finally, what is the market demand for your services?

If you can answer these questions, then you're well on your way to choosing a new marketing niche.

Good luck! I'm sure whatever decision you make will be the right one.

Switching your marketing niche is a big decision, but sometimes it's necessary in order to find more success. I was on the fence for a really long time. Entertainment was all that I knew. All that I had built.

But, change is good.
