Healing the healer: How physicians can overcome the struggle of caring
The power of mindfulness: Understanding our emotions for healthier relationships
It's important to pay attention to our thoughts and feelings. When we experience intense emotions like anxiety or anger, it's crucial to understand the root cause of those feelings. In my experience, when I feel angry because a family member won't listen to my advice, it's often because I believe I know what's best for them.
But beneath the surface, there are often more complex emotions like frustration, fear of failure, or sadness. By noticing what we're feeling and what's causing it, we can start to examine our thoughts and beliefs. This can help us consider alternative perspectives and find more compassionate ways of thinking.
Instead of focusing solely on our own opinions, we can try to understand the other person's feelings and experiences. This can lead to more productive conversations and healthier relationships. So take a moment to reflect on your thoughts and feelings, and consider if there's a different way to approach the situation that takes everyone's needs into account.
The power of self-compassion: a key to career success
Looking back, I realize the importance of self-compassion. It's a choice how we talk to ourselves, and I wish I had been more aware of this earlier on. I would have acknowledged the challenges I faced and recognized that it didn't define me as a person.
In addition, I would have spoken out more about how I was feeling. Often, shame keeps us quiet because we think everyone else has it all figured out. But the truth is, everyone struggles at some point in their career. By speaking out and sharing our experiences, we can break down these barriers and create a more supportive work environment.
So, if I could do it all over again, I would practice more self-compassion, acknowledge my challenges, and speak out about my experiences.

The scheduling struggle: How manual mistakes can wreak havoc on your productivity
Creating a schedule for the day may seem simple, but it's far from it. There are so many intricacies that go into the process, from ensuring that no one is double or triple booked to creating an efficient schedule that maximizes productivity. In the days of manual scheduling, mistakes were all too common, leading to wasted time and frustration.
Even with today's technology, mistakes can still happen. It's not uncommon to finish a schedule only to receive calls and texts pointing out errors that need to be fixed. And as you try to correct those mistakes, it's all too easy to make new ones. It's clear that the scheduling process needs a major overhaul, with quality control measures in place to ensure accuracy and efficiency.

The smart clinic of the future: How voice recognition and algorithms are changing the game
Imagine walking into a doctor's office where a camera takes your blood pressure, temperature, and records your voice to determine your mental state. This futuristic technology could soon become a reality, as healthcare professionals look for ways to streamline patient care and improve outcomes.
According to experts, this integrated system could automatically triage patients and categorize them based on their medical history, risk factors, and symptoms. This would allow doctors to focus on patient care instead of paperwork and data entry, leading to better patient experiences and outcomes.
This revolutionary approach to healthcare could also reduce costs and improve efficiency, as doctors would no longer need to spend hours documenting patient encounters. By leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning, the system could identify patterns in patient data, allowing for faster and more accurate diagnoses and treatment plans.
As the healthcare industry continues to evolve, it's exciting to think about the potential impact of these innovative technologies. By leveraging the latest advancements in AI and machine learning, we can improve patient care and outcomes while reducing costs and improving efficiency.

Step up your fall prevention game: How your shoes could be putting you at risk
Falls are no joke. They can cause serious harm, from disability to death. And the cost? Astronomical! So, preventing falls is an absolute must. Did you know that the shoes we wear could be making us more susceptible to falling? That's right! Poorly fitting shoes, both too big and too small, along with high heels and soft cushiony footwear, are all associated with a higher risk of falling.
Luckily, there's hope! With the right research, we can make a difference in reducing fall risk without breaking the bank. Let's work together to keep our patients safe and steady on their feet.

How strong leadership revives faltering health care cultures
Leadership disconnect: the importance of active engagement in organizational culture
When it comes to organizational culture, actions speak louder than words. It's frustrating to see management who are disconnected from the day-to-day operations of the organization, holed up in their offices and out of touch with the staff, physicians, and patients. It's important for leaders to manage by walking around, to have a presence in the organization and to actively listen to the concerns and issues of those around them.
Far too often, I see longstanding issues that could easily be corrected, yet management seems unaware or uninterested. It's these ground-level issues that can have a significant impact on organizational culture, employee morale, and patient outcomes.
We need leaders who are engaged, who are present, and who are committed to creating a positive organizational culture. Leaders who lead by example, who actively listen to their employees and patients, and who are willing to make changes to improve the workplace. Let's work together to create organizations where everyone feels heard, valued, and supported.
Creating a positive work environment in healthcare: strategies for change
To create real change in healthcare, we need to start with a burning platform. We need to clearly communicate what we're striving for: team-based care and patient-centered care. And we need to engage everyone in the organization, from physicians to support staff, in the process.
One way to do this is through managed walking rounds, engaging people where they work and understanding their frustrations and concerns. But we also need to pick our fights wisely. Not every battle is worth fighting, and we need to focus on creating a workplace that feels like home - a place where people can be listened to, treated with respect, and feel safe.
It's not just up to administrative leadership to tell a better story. Physician leadership, both formal and informal, plays a critical role in creating a positive work environment. By committing to patient-centered care, focusing on team-based approaches, and treating everyone with respect, we can create a healthcare system that truly works for everyone. Let's commit to making positive change happen.

Psychological safety: the unspoken key to health care success
Unleashing the power of leadership: How leaders can make a difference in health care
I'm always surprised by how much leaders can accomplish, even when things seem out of their control. When I'm called in to help, it's usually because things are going poorly - numbers are down, turnover is high, and employees are burning out. But I've learned that it's easy for leaders to get caught up in the bigger picture and overlook the small, meaningful changes they can make within their own teams. Healthcare faces political and financial challenges, but there's always more that can be done to prioritize employee well-being and create lasting impact.
Mastering the art of giving feedback: tips for trainees
What are some things trainees should avoid when giving difficult feedback to their superiors? Well, one of the biggest red flags is giving feedback in a blaming way. It's easy to fall into this trap, even I do it myself sometimes. When we use language that starts with "you" or "you made me feel," it can come across as accusatory and defensive. While this kind of language is common, it's best to avoid it when giving difficult feedback to superiors. So, trainees should be mindful of using language that doesn't blame or accuse their superiors.

United by medicine: a journey of friendship, success, and the power of character
From gratitude to action: Why we must advocate for those less fortunate
I still believe that this country is one of the best places to live in. We are incredibly fortunate and have opportunities that people in countries like Iran may not have. It's heartbreaking to see the persecution of young people who are fighting for basic rights that we take for granted. This is why we feel compelled to take action.
We've attended demonstrations and shared our story with others. As a professional, I strive to educate my students and raise awareness about the struggles of those in less fortunate circumstances. Even my family has contributed by going back to Iran to teach. We all have a part to play in creating a better world for everyone.

Revolutionizing human rights: the importance of awareness and advocacy
Keeping the awareness and narrative alive is crucial. It's been almost nine months since the start of the revolution in Iran, and peaceful demonstrations are taking place not just in America but all over the world. We're fighting for our basic human rights, including the right to practice our religion and enjoy freedom.
By talking about the situation and keeping the narrative alive, we can ensure that the fight for justice continues. It's important to raise awareness and keep the conversation going so that people don't forget about what's happening. We must continue to push for change and stand up for our rights, even when it's difficult.
