Persistence comes from the motivation for things we want now, and consistency comes from a motivation to have ongoing future success.
"Motivation gets you going,
but discipline keeps you growing."
- John C. Maxwell
Consistency starts with self-discipline, and self-discipline comes from consistent routine and repetition of daily practices.
Perhaps these five methods will help you create successful daily practices to maintain self-discipline:
- Embrace the uncomfortable: Breaking old habits can feel awkward when implementing new practices that don't feel normal.
- Hide and remove distractions: Keep things on your desktop and surroundings relevant to your current work, such as closing emails, social media distractions, and turning off cell phones, even if only for a set time.
- Be flexible: There will be errors along the way, don't let that stifle you, have the mobility to change, and get back on a positive trajectory.
- Reward yourself: Give yourself scheduled breaks and celebrations, to reward your effort in self-control to stay refreshed and not burn out.
- Give yourself grace: When your plan falls short, acknowledge the challenge and frustration as a learning experience and keep moving forward.
Most importantly, self-discipline is the number one characteristic of achieving long-term personal and business goals.
