Finding or creating a new, better fantastic job is no easy task. The people I’ve had the opportunity to help are bright, savvy and generally well educated. That’s not their biggest challenge. They are ignorant about the reality of how to effectively and efficiently find a new job because they have never been taught how to do so.

Adding to this ignorance is the belief that all we need to know is on the Internet. Wrong! While the Internet has certainly become part of our daily life, for the job seeker it is important to understand that is also a big paid unregulated add so the job seeker needs to be a very careful consumer of job postings, from real to imagined.

There are so many behind the scenes agenda’s that we don’t know about, it is my opinion the Internet job postings have more to do with “deselecting” us than “selecting” us. So again, you need to be a careful consumer, with the informed understanding that perhaps 3% of online submission result in success, while producing much angst, frustration, doubt and isolation.

It is easy to become overwhelmed by the electronic job searching process, with so many more questions than real answers. So, I suggest limiting you online time and instead focus on in-person networking with people you know who therefore will be more likely to put their positive thinking caps on for you as you do targeted research into your areas of interest. Yes, there is some serendipity to this, but in the end, you will be much more able to tell your story to the appropriate people who will actively consider you for employment.
