How will painless Onflow change wellness testing? Insight from R&D engineer

Blood collection hasn’t had significant improvement since the invention of the plastic syringe in 1955.

Collecting blood with needles and syringes is limiting. It requires training and a lot of resources and is prone to errors, injuries, and redraws.

Such complexity gets in the way of simple wellness testing–people who want to know more about their wellness.

Luckily, Loop Medical is on a mission to simplify the practice with its simple device: Onflow.

The new device offers painless, easy, and lifestyle-convenient blood collection.

In this interview, Loop Medical’s R&D engineer Guillaume Rozand shares his thoughts on how Onflow can change wellness testing.

What impact does Onflow have on wellness testing?

“Onflow’s mission is getting people to get preventive care.

“Many people are scared of needles, and it affects their quality of life. And they just postpone their tests and check-ups all the time.

“I know that even more people would be encouraged to get tested if they had an extremely simple and convenient way like Onflow.

“And it’s not just for developing countries. Our device is perfect for places like the US where healthcare is very expensive. You could get the cost down while also being able to draw blood from the comfort of your home and send it back. This just makes healthcare accessible to everyone.

“It really pays to be preventive, and a lot can be done on preventive care. That's one of the main things I'm looking forward to with Onflow.”

How easy is it to use the device?

“It is as simple as putting the device on your arm and pressing a button.

“We recommend that you stay completely static, but it’s nothing compared to a needle and a syringe. It's a minor inconvenience that you don't really feel.

“And you could completely have a normal conversation with someone else while getting your blood drawn. It's really painless and easy.”

How do you compare Onflow to alternatives?

“In terms of user experience, none of the alternatives (needles and fingerpricks) is both painless and collects sufficient volume for most tests.

“It’s a trade-off between volume and convenience–but that’s not the case with Onflow

“Another great feature is not having to disrupt the entire process and chain of diagnosis that you have to go through. Onflow is smooth and convenient for both patients and healthcare professionals

“I think one of the most important advantages is that it integrates easily into the workflow of laboratories. The cartridge is standardized. And so thanks to that, you don't have to re-invent the lab around the device.”

How soon will we be able to use Onflow?

“We’re looking forward to our upcoming studies in the United States. So The team is working on different fronts to put the pieces together. We’re pushing for FDA approval in 2024.”
