Welcome back to "LinkedIn Playbook for Leaders ????"!? As we look ahead into 2025, it’s the perfect time to ask yourself:?
Am I owning my niche on LinkedIn??
Narrowing your focus is essential to establishing thought leadership and credibility—but let’s be honest, it can feel risky. What if focusing too tightly leaves you boxed in? What if you get bored?
Here’s the thing: narrowing your focus isn’t about limiting yourself—it’s about owning your niche with clarity and authority. It allows you to stand out and create more impact for your audience. And it lets others know clearly what you can do for them. However, you don’t need to ignore the evolution of your interests or your audience’s needs to do it. In fact, you shouldn’t.
Your niche should grow with you. If your interests and expertise have changed, chances are your audience’s interests have, too. So, what’s the solution? It’s time for a LinkedIn Reset Challenge. Here is how to do in 3 Steps.
Step 1: Check Your Results: What Worked in 2024? ??
Before you reset your focus, you need to know what resonated. Reflect on your LinkedIn metrics to determine which content has been effective and where there’s room for improvement.
Here are the 5 key metrics I analyze (read the full newsletter here):
?? Action Step: Use this data to identify which themes, topics, or formats resonated most with your audience. Any surprises? These are clues about what your audience values and where your content is making an impact.
Step 2: Review and Refocus: What Matters Now? ???
Once you’ve reviewed your results, take a step back and reflect on what matters to you. To own your niche, your content pillars should align with:
1??Your Customers’ Pain Points: What challenges have you been hearing from your customers? Which new ways are you finding to help them?? These pain points might have shifted with new trends or challenges in your industry. Addressing these keeps your audience engaged.
2?? Your Unique Expertise: What new skills or experiences have you gained this year? Thought leadership grows as your expertise evolves. Showcase the growth that differentiates you.
3?? Your Passions: What excites you most right now? Authenticity and enthusiasm drive engagement, and if you’re not excited about what you post, your audience won’t be either.
As I shared in my newsletter on choosing content pillars (read it here), your content sweet spot is the intersection of these three areas. Focus on just three core content pillars for clarity and impact.
?? Action Step: Revise your content pillars to reflect your audience's needs and your growth as a leader. Choose topics that you can consistently deliver value on and that energize you.
Step 3: Be True to Yourself: Lead with Creative Intuition ??
Here’s the reality: you’re not a pleaser—you’re a leader. That means not everyone will agree with you, and that’s okay. Your job isn’t to please everyone; it’s to stay true to yourself as you lead.
After analyzing the numbers and revisiting your pillars, lean into creative intuition. The human intelligence that separates thought leaders from, well, good marketers often comes from interpreting the data differently and exploring a new direction with potential for better outcomes. What feels authentic to you? What topics ignite your curiosity and energy?
Leaders inspire through boldness, not by blending in. When you focus on topics you care deeply about, you’ll attract an audience that aligns with your vision—and that’s far more powerful than chasing engagement metrics.
?? Action Step: Use your data as a guide, but let your expertise steer your vision. Your audience wants to follow a leader with conviction and insight, not a pleaser who follows trends to win approval.
