The only thing that is certain in life is the uncertainty that it brings along.
Today, most of us are gripped by an overwhelming uncertainty. But the irony is that we do not know
the tricks to deal with it. So, our mind is filled with anxiety and fear. The uncertain times are
triggering a loss in self-confidence and faith.
? When will the world come back to normal?
? What if I loose my job?
? How long can I sustain my business?
? Am I taking the right decision? Will it help my company?
With little knowledge about what the future holds for us and our career, many of us are in an
emotional mess and are faltering in our personal and business decisions.
Don’t worry though. Such response to uncertainty is very natural in humans. Scientifically, human
brain was wired to read uncertainty as danger and trigger us to take refuge. But, back then, we were
still in the primitive era and had to deal with dangerous animals and erratic weathers with much
caution. At that point, uncertain times were a threat to our survival.
Today, things have changed. And, the good news is that with little training and regular practice, we
can teach our brain to accept uncertainty as a regular part of our life and not get anxious about it.
Doing this is possible for each one of us, even during most uncertain times like these. A research has
proved that successful people and leaders with a higher Emotional Quotient can shift their focus
from irrational to rational thoughts and decisions even during uncertainties. So can you.
Here are a few simple ways that will help you to glide through life’s uncertainties and keep calm
during the most unpredictable moments-
? Accept uncertainty as a norm
We love to be in control. Right from planning our daily schedule to our life’s most important stages,
we like to paint our life in advance. But the truth is that we can’t always be in control. We can’t
change the outer circumstances and being in non-acceptance about this causes anxiety and fear of
the future.
So, intelligence is in letting go of this control and accept uncertainty as a norm. Sometimes, it is good
to be pushed into uncertain situations, live your failures and learn from it to emerge out stronger.
? Know the reality, get a grip
When times are uncertain, it is always good to get a reality check done. The best way is to
list down everything that you know and things that you don’t. This can help you to assign
weightage to every element and figure out where you stand in the scheme of things,
prepare for a possible action plan, take rational decisions and be prepared for a contingency.
? Focus on small wins
Don’t nurture your problems, Instead, stay positive and focus on small everyday wins.
Celebrate being alive, safe and protected. Acknowledge the blessings of having a job, a
family, good health and more. Think about the good times that you have spent and the
success that you have enjoyed in the past. Positive thoughts relieve anxieties and fear and
helps one to think rationally. Being in gratitude about what you have can help you remove
your worries about the possible things that you may loose or troubles that you may fall into.
? Take risks
Life and businesses are always about taking risks. Unless you embrace the uncertainty and
are willing to take a tough and risky decision, chances are that you would never succeed.
Don’t worry about being perfect. We are born to make mistakes. All you really need to do is
rationalize your priorities, know what matters most to you and at your work and take well-
calculated risks. But, remember, while you are doing all this, have a well-detailed plan B
ready as a back-up.
? Trust your instinct
Gut has rarely landed people into trouble. So, when we don’t know what lies ahead of us
and what may be the outcome, it is best to give your instinct some space and follow it. As
you practice listening to your gut feeling and how it usually works out for you, it can become
a very powerful weapon to ride over uncertain times and yield favourable results.
? Feel your emotions
Insecurity, fear, anxiety, self-doubt and restlessness are emotions that usually make an
appearance during uncertain times. Do not ignore them or run away from these feelings.
Instead, acknowledge them, feel them, accept them and live them. By doing so, you make
them powerless and slowly move past them.
Hope that these tips will help you go through these uncertain times with much more strength and
enable you to take difficult decisions with more prudence.
