How to Overcome Self Sabotage in Your Design Practice (We All Do It)

How to Overcome Self Sabotage in Your Design Practice (We All Do It)

Self sabotage is something every designer wrestles with and it's a lot like kryptonite. Kryptonite is that killer substance that drained Superman of his powers.

(If you aren't a Superman fan, then think of the Wicked Witch of the West in "The Wizard of Oz," and that fire was her kryptonite...fatal last words "I'm melting...")

My professional kryptonite is my habit of telling any and every client "it's a piece of cake."

Making design look easy (do you do that too?) really doesn't serve at all.

My tendency to pipe up with a "no worries, I've got this," sounds helpful, but at the same time it discounts the expertise and experience required to solve the design dilemma or answer the design request.

You'd be better served by letting them see you sweat. (I know, I know that's counter intuitive, because after all, we are here to make it all look good and appear as if it required no effort.)

When clients realize that you, as an experienced expert, have to "work" on a solution, it sends the clear signal that they could never do what you do, nor should they try.

They also see that you are a valuable expert with superhuman design powers to be able to provide a creative solution and strategies.
