Don’t put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” – Benjamin Franklin
Do you feel like you are going round in circles and stuck in a rut?
Is procrastination causing you to feel fruitless and guilty about your situation?
If you are struggling to persuade yourself to do the things that, you should or want to do
You are not alone. According to Micro biz mag;
- 84% of us are affected to some degree by procrastination
- 1 in 5 of us procrastinates every single day
It’s midnight and you have a deadline looming, you need to submit a report to your manager in the morning. However there you are watching Netflix convincing yourself you will do it later and that you work better under pressure.
There are many reasons that cause us to delay. One of the most common reasons is paralysis by analysis. In a world where there is so much choice it can feel overwhelming and confusing, this prevents us from being able to prioritise tasks. We struggle to discern what is essential thus; we lose motivation and do nothing at all.
The consequences mean that this affects your performance and you are unlikely to be producing work to the best of your ability. It can also cause unnecessary stress and evoke negative emotions including guilt and resentment, which can stop you from moving forwards.
How to overcome procrastination
It is important to acknowledge how you are feeling. Consider, what are you are avoiding? This will enable you to face your fears. Remember it does not have to be all or nothing, one small step at a time will suffice. By breaking larger tasks into smaller segments, this will eliminate how intimidating the task appears to be and therefore increase your motivation.
