Building a solid personal brand can help you establish yourself as an expert in your industry, make you stand out from the crowd, open new doors with other successful people and guide you to opportunities you may never have thought of on your own. And all those things can generate a consistent flow of leads for your services.

Sounds like a dream come true, right? It is — once you’re established and into a groove. But getting started can be a challenge, particularly when you’re trying to figure out…

How to find your unique voice

To establish your personal brand you must first discover what’s unique about yourself and what makes you stand out from others in your industry or your role — and how to articulate it in a way that feels authentic and resonates with your audience.

This is difficult for a lot of people. Be patient with yourself, and be ready to face down inner doubts that block creativity. Instead, put yourself in a comfortable mental space, and ask yourself these questions:

• What words would you use to describe yourself and your personality?
• If your brand were a drink, which one would it be and why?
• What impression do you want to make when people see and interact with your brand??
• Who are your personal brand inspirations?
• Write down 2–3 things you are passionate about outside of work. How could these passions connect to your message as a thought leader?

Those questions channel your thoughts to focus on the positive — on you, on the now, on the future and on becoming.

Write down your answers. Think about them during your off time. Let them evolve and grow, and write about them some more. And repeat. Through all the words, you’ll start to see a more defined picture of your brand. You’ll see your value proposition. You’ll discover your elevator pitch. And you’ll hear your voice.?

That’s you. That’s what makes you uniquely, wonderfully you.
