How to Overcome Obstacles as an Artist (watch for the signs)
We all face obstacles in our lives. Some people let those obstacles stop them in their tracks, while others find ways to overcome them. For artists and creatives, obstacles can often appear on our path toward success and a happy life. But we shouldn't let them stop us from pursuing our dreams. Here's how to overcome some of the most common obstacles you'll encounter as an artist or creative.
Lack of Inspiration
One of the most common obstacles artists face is a lack of inspiration. It can be challenging to muster up the motivation to create art when feeling uninspired. But there are ways to overcome this obstacle. First, try exploring different mediums and styles. Experimenting with new techniques can help jumpstart your creativity. Additionally, make time for activities that inspire you, such as reading, listening to music, or spending time outdoors. By exposing yourself to new things, you'll start to see the world in a different light—which can make all the difference in your art.
Some of my best ideas happen when I walk my dog on a wooded trail where I can get lost in thought. Something about being unplugged and away from technology seems to help my mind wander.?
Self-Doubt
It's normal to feel Doubtful of your abilities as an artist or creative. However, letting self-doubt take over can prevent you from reaching your full potential. When you're doubting yourself, take a step back and look at your past accomplishments. Remember that every journey has its ups and downs—you just have to keep moving forward. Additionally, try seeking feedback from other artists or creatives whose opinions you trust. Positive feedback can help boost your confidence and remind you that you're on the right track.

A big reason why I post my cartoons here on Medium (and other platforms) is to help with my self-doubt. I can't tell you how many times I thought a cartoon was crap only to be loved by hundreds of people (this works in reverse too). I was terrified when I first started, but the comments have helped with my confidence and motivated me to continue publishing over the years.
Fear of Failure
Many people don't pursue their dreams because they're afraid of failure. But failing is part of the creative process—it's how we learn and grow as artists. If you're afraid of failing, remind yourself there's no such thing as perfect art. Embrace your mistakes and use them as an opportunity to improve your craft. Additionally, try setting smaller goals, so you don't feel overwhelmed by the thought of achieving something big. Breaking down your goals into manageable pieces will make them feel more attainable—and reduce the chance of experiencing anxiety or stress over not meeting your expectations.
One of my favorite authors, Jon Acuff, once said in one of his books: "Which would you rather deal with? The fear of today or the regret of tomorrow?" That quote has kept me going on many things. Failure is part of the process - every successful person I've ever read about can share their story of failure. I don't fear failure anymore - I fear not wanting to try.
It's normal to face obstacles when pursuing a creative career—but that doesn't mean they have to stop you from achieving your goals. By exploring different mediums, seeking out feedback, and setting small goals, you can overcome any obstacle that comes your way. So don't give up on your dreams—keep pursuing them, even when the going gets tough!
