"Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown" - William Shakespeare
Even in the days of Shakespeare, the weight of leadership was clear. In a previous newsletter, we asked if leadership was worth it. My answer was, "Yes. If you are strong enough". And that answer still holds true, but we must be prepared for the challenges that come with leadership.
Today, let's focus on one challenge that isn't often discussed: feelings of loneliness. Leadership often feels like a solitary journey. One day you're part of the team, and the next, your peers become subordinates. The shift in dynamics feels isolating, creating awkwardness with your former peers who aren't quite sure how to interact with you.
Maintaining The Stoic Persona
Maintaining relationships with former peers can be tricky. You have the power dynamic, and the need for confidentiality can create a significant barrier to authentic relationships.
So what can you do?
Creating Authentic Connections & Communicating with Your Team
Be as transparent: Have an "Ask Me Anything "session where you embrace vulnerability. It's ok to tell your team that you don't have all the answers. Sharing your challenges can humanize you in the eyes of the team. When they see you are human and approachable, they are more likely to share their thoughts and concerns.
Ask for their feedback: Hold regular 1:1 meetings, show appreciation, and listen to their feedback and ideas. Active listening is important for effective communication. Don't interrupt others while they are speaking. Show empathy and understanding, and acknowledge their perspectives. Ask for their feedback and set clear expectations. This will help the team to feel valued and heard.
Cultivate A Culture of Inclusion and Team Building
Encourage diverse perspectives: Creating an inclusive culture where diverse perspectives are valued encourages collaboration and ensures that everyone feels heard. Make space so everyone has an opportunity to speak and give input. Remember that some may prefer to give feedback privately.
Team Building: Use opportunities for team building to break down barriers. I used to love buying my team lunch for the day and we all just hung out and chatted over Zoom for lunch. I once used a collaborative video game to do team building. It was a lot of fun and taught them how to work together.

Mentorship & Peer Support
Join Networks: Establish or join a network of mentors and peers who can provide support. Participating in these groups allows you to share experiences and gain insights from others. You also may have a new set of peers to interact with now that you've been promoted. Take time to get to know them as well. This can give you new perspectives on leadership and alleviate feelings of isolation.
