Have you ever decided to do something exciting, but then were too afraid to dive in?
Over the weekend, we went to a Big Air dog competition. In skateboarding, Big Air means soaring. And, yes I have pictures of my two sons getting really Big Air aka flying in space. With no real clear idea of what Big Air meant in the dog world, I was ready to find out.
For the dogs, Big Air means soaring over water and diving into a very large pool to retrieve a toy. Some handlers tossed the toy into the water and then encouraged their dog to run down the platform and dive in. The other option? Stand at the edge and toss the toy in so the dog can follow it.
How exciting must this be for the dogs? I can’t even imagine. Every single dog appeared to be having their very best day ever. Most followed the command to either run and retrieve or chase the toy as it was thrown. And who doesn't love the feeling of getting it right?
One dog, I think its name was Candor, was so happy to be in the water after diving in it took five people coaxing Candor to get out. Other dogs were all business: run, dive, retrieve and leave.
Out of all the dogs, I related most to Lucy. Wearing a snazzy Super Fly Suit [a fashionable way to tell dogs apart in pictures], Lucy looked like a real champ. She was excited. She followed the command to run on the platform. But, when it came time to jump in, she stopped. Back to the start. Run to the end. Stop. After four tries, her handler said we’ll come back.

Waiting around, I wondered if Lucy would come back. And, if she did – would she jump in? Lots of other dogs did. Jumps ranged from 8’ to almost 20’. Dogs in the crowd were barking and cheering their canine buddies on. Dog lovers applauded for dogs like Dale Earnhart Jr. ?Everyone was having a good day.
And then, Lucy was back. Would she dive this time? Nope, not the first try. Nope, not on the second try. “Go Lucy Go!” everyone was cheering. Trotting back to the starting line, Lucy looked out at the crowd, wagged her tail, ran down the runway, and jumped right in. “YAY, Lucy!!!”
What’s keeping you from diving in? Are you willing to get wet?
