How Over-Taxed is Harris County?
Recently, the Harris County Appraisal District began sending their annual "Notice of Appraisal" to property owners. Many Harris County residents are experiencing "sticker shock", and rightfully so. This letter serves as a warning of what your property taxes will be based on if you do not file a tax protest. HCAD's Chief Appraiser, Roland Altinger, published a brief video in which he stated that property values in Harris county had gone up by over 20% on average since last year.
Local government officials would love for you to simply take their word, pay your taxes, and be happy that your property has appreciated so much. This is a bad strategy. Instead, we advise property owners to file a property tax protest every year. This year is certainly no exception. A January press release by the Houston Association of Realtors suggests HCAD's estimates may be a bit high.
76% of tax year 2021 protests in Harris County ended in favor of the taxpayer, with an average reduction of $58,683. Don't leave money on the table. Contact Texas Tax Reduction to learn how we can help lower your property taxes.
