How Our Community Sponsors Inspire Central Florida Youth Through Music Education

Our Young People’s Concerts just wrapped up in October, but there’s so much more still to come in our education programs this Season. Aside from our Young People’s Concerts, we also offer virtual music lessons, the Side-by-Side Music Mentorship Program, our Symphony Storytime Series, and the OPO String Summer Camp. One of the core values at the OPO is Education and we believe music education programs have a long-lasting effect on Central Florida students. We know that education programs help build 21st Century Skills (communication, collaboration, creativity, and resilience.) Based on evidence-based studies, the Arts Education Partnership concluded “music education has powerful and undeniable effects on student learning, achievement, and lifelong success” (“Music Matters,” 2018). The really amazing part is we are now seeing adults who participated in OPO education programs as children continue their love for music in our audience. Giving further proof of our programs long-term impact and those who engage with music at an early age share a love and appreciation for music that lasts a lifetime.

However, the OPO’s education programs are not yet completely financially sustainable without philanthropic support. Thanks to the support of our community partners, we continue to expand our reach to every corner of our community.

Young People's Concerts

Our largest and longest-running education program that you might have heard of is our Young People’s Concerts (YPC). This year’s theme of Symphony in Space provided an unforgettable concert and learning experience for Central Florida third, fourth, and fifth graders. This program serves more than 70,000 Central Florida students and for most of these children, it’s their very first opportunity to experience symphonic music. We’re proud to collaborate with Opera Orlando and Orlando Ballet to create an engaging concert that introduces students to three performing arts forms: orchestra, opera, and ballet. The students’ learning is also expanded through pre-concert lessons from our annual YPC Guidebook taught in the classroom prior to attending a performance.?

Thanks to funding from these sponsors, thousands of children returned to in-person performances and can see classical art performances for the first time in state-of-the-art performing venues including Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orange County, Osceola County School for the Arts, and Peabody Auditorium in Volusia County.

This program is made possible by community partners from counties in Central Florida who support music education for their students.?

Symphony Storytime Series

The Symphony Storytime Series brings beloved children’s stories to life with timeless classical music, unforgettable narrators, and beautiful illustrations. The series helps to instill a love of music in young children (ages 3-7) and their families. To fully serve our community, the OPO also brings Symphony Storytime to underserved children and adults at community sites in Central Florida, including organizations serving adults and children with disabilities and hospital visits.

OPO Strings Summer Camp

The OPO’s Strings Summer Camp serves students who want to grow musically while learning from top professional musicians and a great opportunity for high school-level students to develop skills in chamber and orchestral playing, music theory, solo performance, and more. Almost 50% of the students attending camp receive scholarships and community partners like the Universal Orlando Foundation help subsidize that which tuition does not cover.

Side-by-Side Music Mentorship Program

Our Side-by-Side Music Mentorship program offers opportunities for middle and high school students to receive instruction from OPO musicians through group lessons that build mentor/role model relationships. OPO professional musicians teach a sectional course each semester that culminates in a public performance with students and musicians playing alongside each other. Musicians help students improve technique and artistry, while providing customized instruction, therefore providing a more level playing field for audition season. While extraordinary musical talent is found throughout our community, students with limited economic means do not have equal access to equitable music education resources.

The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra offers music education for all stages of life, including virtual music lessons and Musical Insights with the Friends of the Orlando Philharmonic.

Thank you for the continued investment in the students and their futures!
