The concept of organic farming can be traced back to the early 1900s. FH King and Sir Albert are considered to be the pioneers of this concept. He was of the opinion that biologically based pest control and crop rotation with manure prepared fertilizers is a relatively better farming system. Organic farming is such an agricultural production system, which promotes the sustainable use of resources and maintains the natural balance in the environment. It enhances agricultural health including biodiversity, biological cycles and soil biological health.
Organic Farming in the Indian Economy.
The advent of the Green Revolution in the early 1960s led to a massive growth in agriculture. Extensive experiments with chemical fertilizers and pesticides have shown that long-term use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides can prove very harmful. Organic farming is the only option to escape this chemical world.
India had 1.50 million hectares of organically cultivated land in 2016, with 0.3 million hectares added in the same year. According to the World Organic Agriculture Report published in Sun 2018, India produces about 30% of the total organic agriculture production. 835,000 are registered producers.
