How to Open MSG files on Mac - Complete Guide

Introduction: The Challenge of Opening MSG files on Mac

So, you've got this file with a weird ".msg" extension, and your Mac's giving you the side-eye. What gives? Well, that's an MSG file, the kind Microsoft Outlook uses to store emails.

Normally, you'd just double-click, but if you're on a Mac, Outlook might not be your best friend. It can be a bit finicky with those MSG files, especially if you don't have the full Outlook for Mac software installed.

But don't worry, you've got options! There are a bunch of ways to open those MSG files on your Mac, even without Outlook. Let's dive in and explore them together.

How to Open MSG files on Mac: 5 Simple Methods

Alright, so how do we crack open these MSG files on your Mac? Don't worry, it's not rocket science. You've got several options, and the best one for you depends on what you need and what tools you have handy.

  1. Outlook Web App: If you've got an Outlook account (even a free one), you can use the web version to view MSG files. It's a quick and easy solution, especially if you're just checking the content of a few emails.
  2. TextEdit: Your Mac comes with this built-in text editor, which can open MSG files in a pinch. It won't look pretty, but you'll get the raw text and maybe some basic info.
  3. Third-Party Viewers: There are some handy apps specifically designed to open and view MSG files on Mac. These often give you a much nicer viewing experience than TextEdit. Some are free, while others might cost a few bucks.
  4. Convert to Other Formats: If you need to open the MSG file in another app, like Apple Mail, you can convert it to a different format like EML or PDF. There are online tools and software that can help with this.
  5. Run Windows on Your Mac (Advanced): This one's a bit more techy, but if you're really committed, you can set up your Mac to run Windows and use the full Outlook software. It's a bit overkill for most people, but hey, it's an option!

In the following sections, we'll break down each of these methods step by step, so you can choose the best way to open MSG files on Mac for you. Let's get started!

Method 1: How to Open MSG files on Mac with Outlook Web App

If you have an Outlook or Microsoft 365 account, you're in luck! The Outlook Web App (OWA) is a free and easy way to open MSG files on Mac. Here's how:

  1. Email Yourself the MSG File: Find the MSG file on your Mac and attach it to an email sent to your own Outlook account.
  2. Open Outlook Web App: Head over to Outlook.com and log in with your credentials.
  3. Access Your Inbox: Open the email you sent to yourself with the MSG file attached.
  4. Click the Attachment: Double-click the MSG file to open it directly in OWA.

And that's it! You should now be able to view the MSG file in your web browser, just like any other email. You can read the message, see any attachments, and even download the file if you need to.

Pros of Using Outlook Web App:

  • Free: It's completely free if you have a Microsoft account.
  • Easy: The process is simple and doesn't require any extra software.

Cons of Using Outlook Web App:

  • Requires Internet: You need to be online to use OWA.
  • Limited Functionality: You can't edit or reply to the MSG file directly in OWA.

But hey, if you just need to quickly open and read an MSG file, OWA is a great option!

Now, let's move on to the next method, in case you don't have an Outlook account or want to try something else.

Method 2: How to Open MSG files on Mac with TextEdit

If you don't have Outlook or need a quick peek inside an MSG file without fuss, your Mac's got you covered. TextEdit, that simple text editor you probably haven't given much thought to, can actually open MSG files!

Here's the super easy way to do it:

  1. Find Your MSG File: Locate the MSG file you want to open in Finder.
  2. Right-Click (or Control-Click): Do a right-click or Control-click on the file.
  3. Choose "Open With": From the menu that pops up, select "Open With" and then choose "TextEdit."

Boom! Your MSG file will open right up. Now, don't get too excited. You won't see the pretty formatted email like you would in Outlook. Instead, you'll get the raw text of the message, which might include some messy code and details. However, you'll still be able to read the main content of the email and extract any important information.

Pros of Using TextEdit:

  • Built-in: It's already on your Mac, so no need to install anything.
  • Quick and Easy: It's a super simple way to open MSG files in a pinch.

Cons of Using TextEdit:

  • Limited View: You won't see any formatting, attachments, or images.
  • Messy: The raw text can be difficult to read if you're not tech-savvy.

If you just need to grab a quick piece of info from an MSG file, TextEdit is a good option. But if you need a more complete view, let's explore some other methods.

Method 3: How to Open MSG files on Mac with Third-Party Viewers

If you regularly work with MSG files or need a more polished way to view them than TextEdit, a third-party MSG viewer might be your best bet. These dedicated apps offer a range of features for opening, reading, and managing MSG files on your Mac.

Here are a few popular options:

  • Macuncle MSG Viewer: This app provides a clean and intuitive interface for opening and reading MSG files. You can view attachments, extract them, and even search through multiple MSG files at once. It's a freemium app, meaning you get some basic features for free, but you'll need to pay for more advanced functionality. You can also export MSG files to PDF or other formats. It offers a free trial, but you'll need to purchase a license to continue using it.
  • FreeFileViewers MSG Viewer: This is another great MSG file viewer for Mac. It supports batch processing, allowing you to open multiple MSG files simultaneously.
  • Other MSG Viewers: There are other MSG viewers available for Mac, each with its own set of features and pricing. Some popular options include BitRecover MSG Converter, Turgs MSG File Viewer, and 4n6 MSG Viewer.

To use a third-party MSG viewer:

  1. Download and Install: Choose a viewer that fits your needs and download it from the App Store or the developer's website. Install it on your Mac.
  2. Open the MSG File: Launch the viewer and use its "Open" function to select the MSG file you want to view.
  3. View and Manage: The viewer will display the MSG file in a user-friendly format, allowing you to read the message, view attachments, and perform other actions depending on the app's capabilities.

Pros of Using Third-Party Viewers:

  • Better Viewing Experience: These apps offer a more organized and readable view of MSG files than TextEdit.
  • Additional Features: Many viewers offer features like attachment extraction, search, and conversion to other formats.

Cons of Using Third-Party Viewers:

  • Cost: Some viewers require a purchase or subscription.
  • Learning Curve: You may need to spend some time familiarizing yourself with the app's features and interface.

Overall, third-party MSG viewers offer a convenient and comprehensive way to open MSG files on Mac. Consider your specific needs and budget when choosing the right viewer for you.

Method 4: How to Convert MSG files on Mac to Other Formats

If the previous methods didn't quite hit the mark, or if you need to open your MSG file in a specific Mac app like Apple Mail, converting it to a different format might be the answer. This is especially handy if you're dealing with multiple MSG files and want to view them in a more familiar environment.

Here's the deal:

You can convert MSG files to a variety of formats, but the most common and useful ones are:

  • EML: This is a standard email format that's widely supported by email clients, including Apple Mail.
  • PDF: PDFs are great for archiving and sharing emails, as they preserve the formatting and can be opened on any device.

To convert MSG files, you have a few options:

  • Online Converters: There are plenty of free online converters that can handle MSG files. Simply select your file, choose the desired output format (EML or PDF), and download the converted file. FreeFileViewers and SysTools are two popular options.
  • Dedicated Software: If you need more features or want to convert multiple MSG files in bulk, you can use dedicated MSG file converter software. Some popular options include Mailsware MSG Converter and Macuncle.

Once you've converted your MSG file, you can easily open it in the corresponding app. For example, you can open EML files in Apple Mail or other email clients, while PDFs can be opened with Preview or any PDF reader.

Keep in mind that converting MSG files might sometimes result in minor formatting changes or the loss of certain attachments. However, it's usually a small price to pay for the convenience of being able to open your MSG files in your preferred app.

Method 5 (Advanced): How to Open MSG files on Mac by Running Windows

Alright, tech wizards, this one's for you. If you're dealing with a large folder of MSG files or need the full power of Microsoft Outlook on your Mac, you can actually run Windows on your trusty Apple machine. It's a bit more involved than the other methods, but it gives you full access to Outlook's features for managing those pesky MSG files.

Here's the gist:

You have two main options for running Windows on your Mac:

  • Virtualization Software: Apps like Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion create a virtual Windows environment on your Mac. You can install Windows within this environment and run Outlook just like you would on a PC.
  • Boot Camp: This is a utility built into your Mac that lets you install Windows directly on your hard drive. You'll need to partition your drive and choose whether to boot into macOS or Windows.

Both options require you to have a valid Windows license, and they'll take up some space on your hard drive. But if you absolutely need to use Outlook for Windows to manage your MSG files, this is the way to go.

Now, this method isn't for everyone. It's a bit more technical and involves some setup, but it's a powerful solution for power users who need the full Outlook experience on their Mac.

Troubleshooting Tips for Opening MSG files on Mac

Alright, so you've tried a few of the methods we've covered, but you're still running into trouble opening those MSG files. Don't throw your keyboard just yet – let's troubleshoot this!

Here are a couple of common issues and how to tackle them:

Old Outlook Versions: If your MSG file is from a really ancient version of Outlook (like, pre-2007), it might not play nice with some viewers. Try converting it to a newer MSG format or using a viewer that specifically supports older versions.

Garbled Text in TextEdit: If you're seeing a jumble of symbols and weird characters in TextEdit, it's likely an encoding issue. Try opening the file in another app or using an online converter to see if that fixes it.

Attachments Not Opening: If you can't open attachments in your MSG file, double-check the file type. Some viewers might not support all types of attachments. You might need to try a different viewer or convert the attachment to a more compatible format.

App Errors: If you're getting error messages when using a third-party viewer, make sure you've got the latest version of the app installed. Also, check the developer's website for any known issues or troubleshooting tips.

And if all else fails, don't be afraid to ask for help! The internet is full of helpful forums and communities dedicated to all things Mac. You can also reach out to the developer of your chosen MSG viewer for support.

Remember, patience is key! Opening MSG files on Mac can be a bit tricky at times, but with a little persistence, you'll get there.

You can change the file extension from .msg to .eml so that you can open the file normally with Outlook and still use all Outlook features. That worked for me
