Born in 1937 in a small town called Malerkotla, Punjab, Gupta’s early life was pretty ordinary. His upbringing was steeped in India’s rich culture and guided by the wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita. It’s clear to me that these values shaped his mindset, his ambitions, and ultimately, his journey in a significant way.

From a Teacher to a Game-Changer in Business

Here’s the interesting part Gupta wasn’t always in the business world. He started out as a school teacher. Can you believe that? In 1971, he made a bold move. Gupta bought a failing electrical goods company called Havells for Rs. 700,000. This wasn’t just a business move; it was his chance to create something meaningful. Let’s talk about Havells for a second. It was founded by Haveli Ram Gandhi, but it hadn’t quite made its mark. When Gupta took over, his mission was simple: build a brand that people could trust. He set up the company’s first manufacturing unit in Kirti Nagar, Delhi, and focused on producing reliable, high-quality, and locally-made electrical products. That move was a game-changer for Havells and, to be honest, for India as a whole.

Expanding Beyond Expectations

What I find most impressive is how Havells grew over time. They didn’t just stick to one thing. The company expanded its product range to include circuit protection devices, cables, fans, switches, air conditioners, and so much more. The reason for this success, in my opinion, comes down to one thing: Gupta’s dedication to quality and trust. He built a reputation that customers could count on, and that’s something money can’t buy.

Carrying Forward the Legacy

When Gupta passed away in 2014, his son Anil Rai Gupta stepped in. What really stands out to me is how Anil managed to not just sustain but also grow Havells. The company now runs 15 manufacturing plants across India, making 95% of its products domestically. That’s huge. With over 6,500 employees and more than 20,000 trade partners, Havells is reaching customers in over 70 countries. And the numbers? They speak for themselves a valuation of Rs. 1,21,598 crore.

To me, the story of Qimat Rai Gupta and Havells isn’t just about business. It’s about having a vision and sticking to your values, no matter what. Gupta believed in building something reliable and trusted, and he stuck to it. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the simplest ideas like doing things the right way can lead to massive change.
