Malnutrition remains one of Kenya's most persistent public health challenge, affecting millions and exacerbating issues like stunted growth, poor educational outcomes, and reduced economic productivity. Despite ongoing interventions, our Battle against Malnutrition has been Crippled by siloed efforts, fragmented strategies, and inadequate Coordination among Key stakeholders. But there's hope on the horizon with the adoption of the One Health approach.
Why One Health?
One Health is more than just a buzzword; it's a holistic framework that recognizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. The recent resolutions from the 4th International Nutrition Conference, hosted by the KENYA NUTRITIONISTS & DIETICIANS INSTITUTE , marked a significant milestone in this journey. They Urged the Ministry of Health to create an Expert Committee, consisting of professionals across various sectors, including Nutritionists and Dieticians, to help in the Integration and Effective Implementation of One Health as a Strategy for managing and Reducing the Persistent Malnutrition Rates.
The Power of Multi-Sectoral Collaboration
But how exactly will One Health strengthen Multi-Sectoral efforts to combat malnutrition? The answer lies in collaboration. Under the One Health approach, stakeholders from different sectors—Health, Agriculture, Education, Environment—will work together, leveraging their unique expertise to create a comprehensive and unified response to Malnutrition. This coordinated effort will ensure that policies, programs, and interventions are more effective, sustainable, and inclusive. The KENYA NUTRITIONISTS & DIETICIANS INSTITUTE recommends the Ministry of Health to be the Primary Custodian in implementing this. Other key Stakeholders like the Kenya Union of Nutritionist and Dieticians, support it.
For example, Integrating Agricultural policies with Nutritional goals can ensure that food production is aligned with the dietary needs of our population. Similarly, Educational programs can be designed to Promote better Nutritional Practices from an early age, ensuring long-term Behavioral Change. Environmental Health initiatives can also contribute by addressing factors like Food Safety and Access to clean water, which are crucial in preventing Malnutrition.

The Role of Nutritionists and Dieticians
Nutritionists and Dieticians will play a pivotal role in this Multi-Sectoral framework. Their expertise will guide the development of Nutrition-Sensitive Policies and Interventions that are grounded in science and tailored to the specific needs of our population. As part of the Expert Committee, they will ensure that nutrition is at the forefront of Health and Development Agendas, in line with the SDGs, advocating for increased funding, better resource allocation, and stronger policy integration.
However, it is important to note that the success of One Health in combating malnutrition will depend on our collective commitment. We must push for implementation of the Expert Committee, Revision of the existing One Health Strategic plan 2021-2025, support Cross-Sector Collaboration, and ensure that Nutrition remains a National priority.
Let us unite our efforts to create a healthier, more nourished Kenya—one where every child, every family, and every community can thrive.
