How one blog post generates $13,000 per month

When most people think of blog posts, they think about writing random articles on the services they offer and basically wish that these posts will somehow make them or their company money in the future.

For the longest time, I genuinely didn't understand how blog posts were valuable to businesses. In my mind, it went something like:

  • You write a blog post
  • Some potential customer magically finds your site
  • They read your amazing article and hand you money

It wasn't until I took several courses, start building on my own sites and doing client work that I started to understand the true ROI of blog posts. I'm going to give you a thorough breakdown on how one post from Adamenfroy.com generates $13,000 per month to illustrate how you can do this. It's definitely not easy or quick, but the rewards can be outsized.

In 2019, Adam Enfroy wrote a blog post on the keyword "best podcast hosting" on his new blog. It was a blog post where he reviewed the best podcast hosting services. He wrote the blog post and it started to gain traffic over the next few months. Once the post was on the 2nd or 3rd page of Google for the results, he started to build backlinks to increase the strength of that page. He got to the top 3 results for that specific keyword and started to make around $500 per month from affiliate sales.

This is how the monetization process typically goes for most blog posts. You write the post, optimize it, build links if necessary and then you either monetize with display ads on the page and/or with affiliate links. $500 per month is pretty great for one blog post.

The monetization for that post changed when a company reached out to him and offered him payment to be ranked at the top of his post. Podcast hosting companies simply could not compete for that lucrative keyword (best podcast hosting) since the first page was filled with blog posts that were 3,000+ words that also had many authoritative links. That single blog post was well over 400 authoritative links including some of the most powerful sites on the internet like Yahoo, HubSpot, Weebly, etc. This is more links and authority than most sites have and it's all pointing to one blog post.

If you're a podcast hosting company in this position, the only viable option you have is PPC (which can be incredibly expensive) or make a deal with one of the top ranking sites for that keyword. This keyword can basically make or break your business. So that's what companies started to do. They offered him $4,000 per month to be placed as the top company and he negotiated it to $5,000 per month.

This monetization method is referred to as CPA (cost per action) affiliate marketing. Instead of paying Google dozens of dollars per click, businesses can direct to independent publishers like blog owners and get a much lower CPC (cost per click). This is a win-win model for affiliate marketing because the blog owner makes a lot more money and the company pays reduces their marketing spend by going direct to publishers.

With just one deal, the monetization from that post went from $500 to $5,000 per month. The blog post was also getting affiliate clicks and sales, so the revenue only increased over time with the recurring deals and affiliate sales. Today, that post generates $13,000 per month. $8,000 out of that is in recurring affiliate commissions + CPA deals from one company and $5,000 from that is with other deals from companies on that list.

Hearing someone make $13,000 per month from one blog post is cool, but what does that actually mean for your business?

You need to identify what are the transactional keywords related to your business. This is what will be driving the vast majority of your revenue from your SEO traffic. If you rank highly for the transactional keywords in your niche, you will have unparallel advantage over your competitors. Examples of these types of keywords include:

  • Best lead generation software
  • Best plumber in Toronto
  • Best ecommerce email marketing agency

Make sure to cover the transactional keywords in your niche by writing blog posts about them. It's not a quick or easy process, but if you cover all the transactional posts in your niche and build authority over time with links, you can build a moat around sub-niche and ultimately your niche.

What do you guys think about this monetization method? Let me know if the comments.

Hi Ali, thanks for this lesson in blog post monetization. I learned a lot, especially how the better you rank on Google for competitive queries, the more monetization options you have. Cheers!
