How old is young?
Am I too young for my job? Or am I already too old?
Sometimes I feel like I'm being driven by an age debate in which our society limits itself.
You have to finish your studies at 25. Establish yourself in your profession by your early 30s. And at 35, according to many HR Managers, the "ideal employee age" ends.
That's insane!
In times of a shortage of skilled workers, companies and their HR Managers need to get away from traditional ideas about the "ideal age”.
Because in my view, there is no such thing.
Anyone who is not a professional soccer player or fighter pilot who has to retire at the age of 41 because supersonic flights are an insane strain on the body should be allowed to work as long as their fitness allows.
The reverse is also true for me: Why am I allowed to drive a car accompanied at the age of 17, but not a truck with a trailer?
We must finally rethink and become more liberal when it comes to age limits.
The planned amendment of the driving license directive by the EU Commission is, in my view, long overdue in times of dramatic shortage of truck drivers.
Incidentally, I am 26 years old and have been at home for four years in an international company that focuses more on skills and qualifications than on rigid age limits.
I have been a Business Development Executive at Seaco since 2020.
What I like about my job: Working in teams where background, qualification and life experience mix.
Because the result is almost always young, unusual ideas.
