What are the different types of Switzerland Residence Permits?

To work in Switzerland, one must apply for a residence permit to stay in the country. The different types of Switzerland Residence Permits are as follows:

  • Permit L (Short-term Residents)

International citizens who are interested in working in the country for a period of 3 months to 1 year are eligible to apply for this permit. The duration you can stay with this permit is the same as the one mentioned in your employment contract.

  • Impossible (certain technical reasons for enforcement)

  • Ci Permit (foreign nationals residents with gainful employment)

This residence permit with gainful employment is granted to family members like spouses and children less than 25 years of age who live with the primary applicant. The Ci permit has a limited validity influenced by the duration of the primary holder’s function.

  • Permit S (People in need of Protection)

The Permit S allows holders to stay in the country and is not permitted to leave the country and come back. The S permit holders are not eligible to hold residence in the country. If the individual with an S Permit is interested to change employment then they have to ask permission. It is mandatory to show the new employer a copy of their S Permit.
