How NotionApps became the missing piece of Notion

In this article, I will talk about how NotionApps (a tool to build apps from Notion databases) became the missing piece of Notion after we started supporting “Relations” last month.

It will also help you understand how to use the app builder for your Notion and solve your use cases. Explained with examples below.

Why were we called the missing piece of Notion??

They called us “the missing piece of Notion” because they could now build app experiences to clients and other stakeholders with whom they do not want to share Notion pages directly

When we launched NotionApps in April last year, it was a simple tool to convert Notion databases into view-only directory-like apps.??

Post that we launched many features like private apps, database permissions, forms for adding and editing data, page blocks, and 25+ components to build apps without any coding. About 2000 Notion users already used the tool.?

They called us “the missing piece of Notion” because they could now build apps for stakeholders with whom they did not want to directly share Notion pages. Be it clients, community members, partners, vendors, field teams, or even other teams who do not use Notion.?

We were humbled but we also know we haven’t shown the app builder in its full form. And that changed last month when we launched something.?

Enter Relations in NotionApps

Notion is arguably the most powerful productivity tool in the world. One of the reasons is the ability to interlink pages, the Relation property type in Notion databases is meant just for that. For example, a Tasks Relation property in the Projects?database allows you to link tasks to your projects and vice versa.?

Last month, we started supporting Relation properties in the app builder. You can now show related data anywhere in the app.

We also introduced two new components - List and Page Selector which will allow app users to list, link, and unlink related data.

This means you can now build apps with screens that are interlinked just like how your data is on Notion. This makes any app 10x more functional and easier to use.

Explained with examples?

Say you are the owner of an agency. You use Notion and track Tasks, Projects, Clients, and Team members in Notion databases. You want apps for two use cases - Task Tracker and Client Portal.?

Now that it supports Relations, you can use NotionApps to build fully functional apps to solve your use cases, however complex the workflows are.??

Example #1 - Task Tracker

An internal app for your team members to manage tasks and projects assigned to them. Sample workflows that can be built on the tool,

  1. Your team admin can create a project for a client and assign tasks to team members
  2. Your team admin can add new tasks to a project and edit them later
  3. Your team member can only view projects in which tasks are assigned to them
  4. Your team member can view all tasks in a project but only edit some tasks

Example #2 - Client Portal

A portal for your clients to login and view their projects and related tasks. Sample workflows that can be built on the tool,

  1. Your client should only see the projects and tasks assigned to them
  2. Your client should view a list of projects and each project should show the list of tasks
  3. Your client can request a new project or request a new task in an existing project??

This way you can build some powerful apps and portals for your users without moving away from Notion.?All for free and without writing a single line of code - making it the missing piece of Notion.

Need more proof? Try it yourself by building your app now!
