What are single-use plastics?

Single-use plastics are typically only used once within their lifetime. These plastics end up either recycled or in most cases end up in a landfill.

Single-use plastics are used in everyday products from food packaging to water bottles and straws. They are also present within our own industry, with single-use plastics used in the production of most chainsaw oil containers and other packaging. Current research suggests 350 million tons of plastic are being produced in the UK. Consequently, only a small percentage is of this is recycled, with a large amount finding its way into our waters and oceans. It is estimated 8 million tons of plastic wash into the ocean each year in the UK. Many experts suggest this amount will be doubled by 2025.

Plastics are not biodegradable and will break down into small particles across many years. As a result, toxic additives used in the manufacturing process are released into the environment. These particles ultimately find their way into our food and water sources. Furthermore, these toxins can lead to increased rates of cancer, infertility and birth defects throughout our populations and communities.
